Three Ways to Store Dry Foods Long Term

A couple of summers ago we invested in a Food Saver Vacuum Seal machine and then after hearing so many good things about the usefulness of the jar sealing attachments we decided to go ahead and purchase them too.  I'm so glad we did!  On quite a few things, this little machine has replaced oven-canning in our home (there are still some things I oven-can)

So now I have the ability to store dry goods long term in three different ways depending on what it is ...

 (1) oven-canning

 (2)  vacuum sealing

 (3)  place item in freezer for approximately 10 days, remove from freezer, let come to room temperature, wrap in plastic wrap and store in a tub, etc.

Knowledge is powerful when it comes to stocking our pantries and knowing how to preserve our food in more than one way ... is priceless!

  1. Patsy, I love your blog, I love your wisdom and I love it that you are sharing it with us. Thank you so much!
I have a question. When you oven can, does it make your shelf life longer? For example, if I oven can my husband's favorite cereal - frosted mini wheats and the box says "expire date, November 2015", is that the date I should write on my jar after I oven can them or does the oven canning prolong the shelf life? I am also going to oven can some corn flakes, sugar and rice. Thank you for the free "Oven Canning E-book" too. Blessing, Cindy Norred from Alabama

    1. Hi Cindy, when I oven-can I pay no attention to the 'best by date/expire date' on the box. Oven-canning does prolong the shelf life of foods, however check your ingredients to make sure there is nothing in what you're oven-canning that wouldn't hold up well. I would not oven-can things that have oil in them. The oil will cause the product to go rancid over time.

  2. Do you go to granny-miller.com ? When on her site look at the top and under kitchen drop down and see pantry and click on that page. She also shows how to use the Food Saver bottle attachment and other ideas. If you have never gone on her site you will love it! She like you is so generous in giving out the methods and ways she does her home making. She has posts also on things about animals and such I have never seen any where else. She is wonderful also in answering any e-mails sent to her. Sarah

    1. Hi Sarah, I used to visit her sight but lost it for some reason. I'm headed back there now. Thanks for the reminder and for the kind words!

  3. After rereading this post today I am wondering what you still elect to oven can and not use your food saver or freeze? I wish Granny Miller was still posting. Last I knew she had stopped again. But you can still buy her book on Amazon that has some of her favorite posts in it. She said she would make at least one more book too. Sarah

    1. Sarah, I can't think of a thing that I've oven-canned since I got my food saver so in that respect I'd have to say that oven-canning, for me, is now being reserved as a back-up to my food saver.
