Pantry Challenge #33 ... 2015

This week found me finally giving in and going to the doctor for a respiratory issue I’ve been fighting for about a month.   One of the medications I was given sent me into a 36 hour period of no sleep and then I only slept for 1 hour before I was wide awake again.  I have never been able to not sleep; I’m one of those people who only have to get still in order to go to sleep so this has been quite an experience.  I’ve taken the medication before, but it has never affected me this way!   

This experience has certainly factored into what I was able to do this week ... but like I always say, a little is better than none!

I harvested the last of the elderberries.   We were able to grow enough this year to meet our needs.  Yeah!  One more thing we don’t have to purchase!!!

I had some stained clothing that I removed the buttons from before repurposing.  I added the buttons to my button jar.

I made scones using this recipe!  It was super easy!  We added a bit of low sugar jelly on top and had a nice treat.

We butchered and preserved more chickens this week.  The meat part of our pantry is getting a much needed boost!

I planted 4 more lemon seeds that I had sprouted.  I’m anxiously waiting to see if they will come up!

We purchased some marked-down bananas we found while out running errands one day.  We rarely buy bananas unless we find them on mark-down.

I made granola this week for an upcoming event.  I made the granola at 4 a.m. when I couldn’t sleep!

We upgraded to Windows 10 this week free of charge.  I like it better than Windows 8 and you can’t beat the price!

I shopped from my gift trunk for a wedding gift.   This is the second time within the last month that I’ve needed a wedding gift and both times I’ve been able to shop from my gift trunk!  Win!  Win!

$5 or Less Pantry Building Challenge: August 13th, 2015

How did you do with our $5 or less pantry building challenge this week?

Here’s what I added to my pantry for less than $5 …


... marked down bananas that cost $2.41!

As they ripen, I'll slice them into circle slices and freeze them in 'smoothie' size portions.

I hope you are beginning to see that it doesn't have to take a lot of money to build up a well stocked pantry!

Pantry Challenge #32 ... 2015


Another week has come and gone and I continue to prepare my pantry for the upcoming winter all the while living as frugally as possible.  

Here’s what I accomplished this week …

I purchased 5 packages of carrots on sale for $.69/bag and canned them. I added 7 pints of baby carrots to my pantry.

We harvested enough tomatoes out of the garden to can 24 quarts of tomato juice.

Our grapes are beginning to ripen so I went picking one day and found enough that were ripe to make 3 quarts of sugar free grape juice.

We had some ends and pieces of bread left from a loaf of white bread from when the doctor told my husband to eat it to help with his recent bout with diverticulitis.  I laid them out on a plate and let them air dry and will turn them into bread crumbs when they are completely dry.  Waste not, want not!

While at Aldi’s this week we discovered they were having a really good sale on skim milk as in …. $.79/gallon.   We don’t drink skim milk but I just couldn’t let that deal pass so we purchased one gallon and brought it home.   What did I do with it since we don’t drink skim milk?   I knew that I had some whole milk in the freezer that we had found on clearance a while back so I took two half gallons out of the freezer and thawed them.  I mixed the whole milk with the skim milk and viola I had 2 gallons of milk that we would use.  Now, we’re not milk drinkers so what will I do with 2 gallons of milk?  I’ll use some of it to make kefir milk, use some of it in meal preparations and finally, I’ll use the rest in some baking I need to do for an upcoming event. 

Also while at Aldi’s, we found organic salad beans on clearance for $.25/can.  We purchased 12 cans and added them to our pantry!

Our chickens are now 3 months old and we started butchering them this week.  We butchered 10 of them and added 6 packages of fryer parts, 5 packages of chicken breast, and 2 packages of wings to the freezer part of my pantry.  I also have the bony pieces to remove the meat from and can as well as use the feet to make broth to can.  There’s not much of these chickens that isn’t getting used!

I harvested and dehydrated more elderberries.  I think there might be one more harvesting and then they’ll be all gone until next year.   My elderberry plants are planted beside my porch which makes harvesting them easy and convenient!

I have more tomato peelings and pulp from the tomato juice I canned to dehydrate, grind and turn into tomato powder.  I’m adding quite a bit of tomato powder to my pantry using the leftover peelings and pulp.  Another opportunity to waste not, want not!

I harvested and saved some more Roma tomato seeds for next year’s growing season.

We found some black-out curtains on clearance that were the right size and color for our dining room windows.  The sun comes in rather strongly through these windows during the afternoon making that area of the house rather warm.  After hanging them we immediately started noticing a difference in the temperature in that area.   I’m hoping we’ll also notice a difference in our power bill!

A couple of weeks ago or maybe longer, I put some plain white flour in the freezer to kill any insect eggs that might hatch in the future.    This week I removed it from the freezer and will store it in a tub for long term storage.

We were gifted with 2 really large watermelons today … hmm, what shall I do with them … besides eat some, of course!

I watched the seventh episode of War Time Farm this week for free on youtube.  I am learning some new to me frugal tips from watching this series ... yes, I make it my business to keep learning as I age, we never get to old to learn.  There is one more episode that I haven’t watched and I hope to be able to watch it this week.

We added $4.50 in change to our change jar this week.

$5 or Less Pantry Building Challenge: August 6th, 2015

How did you do with our $5 or less pantry building challenge this week?

Here’s what I added to my pantry for less than $5 …


... 5 packages of baby carrots!

They were on sale for $.69/bag for a total of $3.45 before tax.

Here's what I did with them ...


I canned them ... and added 7 pints to my pantry.

(That's a jar of tomato juice in the picture that I processed with the carrots ... because there was room for it and because I had it left from the last tomato juice canning I did!)

Pantry Challenge #31 ...2015

The heat and humidity we’re experiencing just doesn’t seem to want to let up!  Our feel like temperatures has been well over 100 degrees more days than not since the first part of June.  The leaves on the trees in our yard are starting to turn and fall off … 6 weeks ahead of time.  The fruit trees we planted in the spring are definitely stressed as well as a couple of long standing dogwood trees.  We can keep them watered but there is simply nothing we can do about the intense heat.  Everything is drooping from this unusually long heat wave; this has definitely been a year of gardening when it’s hard!  However, we are so thankful for what we have been able to harvest and add to our pantry!  Let's see what that was this week!

My to-do list from last time:   


Harvest and dehydrate herbs.   Done!  I harvested and dehydrated lemon balm, lavender, sage, spearmint, peppermint, comfrey and elderberries.

Add rice to my pantry for medicinal purposes when a bland diet is needed.  Done! 



Complete $5 or less pantry challenge.  Done!  I purchased a 10 lb bag of rice for $4.44.  You can read about it HERE!

 





We were given about a gallon of fresh figs so I will need to preserve them asap.  Done!  I made 1 pint and 9 half pints of fig jelly. 





In addition:

We were given a large catfish that a neighbor caught and offered to my husband. My husband dressed it and we had catfish strips for dinner one night.

I canned 14 more quarts of tomato juice this week.  The dehydrator is humming with the pulp and peels in it as I type.  When they are completely dry, I will grind them up into tomato powder.

I needed to make up a big batch of turmeric and vitamin c capsules this week as I’ve just been doing enough to get from week to week.  I filled about 100 capsules while watching another episode of War Time Farm before I had to quit.  Filling each capsule is a mindless thing and for me can be quite monotonous, but having something to watch really made  it better.

I froze 2 dozen of eggs this week in anticipation of our chickens molting which always seems to occur during holiday baking time.

The lady that gave us the figs also gave me some flower seeds. It is well know that I like flowers and when I admired a bush filled with flowers she pulled off some seeds and gave them to me.  When I asked her what the name of the bush was she said she didn’t know but thought it was some kind of ‘sweetheart’ bush.  I want to do some research to see what I can find out about it.

Our Sam’s Club find this week was a box of 24 variety bags of Boulder chips on clearance for $2.01.
