Looking Forward Into 2017 With A Working Pantry ... Teaser #2

Another plan I have in the works is to do a year long work-a-long using my Food Preservation Log/Journal.

Each week I would do a post updating you on how I filled out my log/journal for that week showing what I added to my pantry, in what form it was added, whether it was through home preservation or from the grocery store, etc.

At the end of the year it will be really nice to see all my hard work recorded.  It will also serve as a record of what and how much of each pantry item we added to our pantry. Good record keeping will help us be better stewards of our pantries.

So, does this sound like something that would be helpful to you?  If so, go print out your own Food Preservation Log/Journal HERE.  We'll start this the first week in January ... which is just 3 weeks away ... YIKES!!!!

A Working Pantry is more than just about food! It's about household items needed to keep my home running smoothly readily available when needed.  It's about keeping a gift trunk so that I'm ready for any gift giving occasion.  It's about a lifestyle.  It's about keeping my home and looking well to the ways of my household and it's about doing it all as frugally as possible.  I hope you enjoy what you read here.

  1. I'd really enjoy seeing how as well as where your pantry restock comes from, Patsy. It might give me some ideas of new places to look in my area as well. Also, could you include some suggestions on how you use some of your pantry items. Sometimes I read about things people add to their pantry, but have no idea what they actually use it for. Looking forward to all your new posts in the new year!

  2. This is something I think would be great! Right now I just keep track of my canning on the back of my yearly calendar, but this would be for shopping, too! Excited to get going, again! Nancy G.

  3. I will give it some thought. Right now, I have a blank journal that I record all leftover canning into, then add the new. I also put in items I freeze and any meat we purchase in bulk, or have raised and had processed. I never put in grocery store items. So, in some aspects, it doesn't really tell the whole picture. A more detailed journal might be useful. Since this is a year of transition (i.e. we moved, didn't home-preserve, are using up what we have, used a lot of the stockpile and now am re-growing it) it is a good year to look at other options. I will certainly take a peek and possible download your planner once I get some more printer ink. I think that since the needs of my family are different now, as the kids grow older and don't always eat here, and I don't cook a lot of meals for others right now as I was doing, I want to be really careful to not let the stockpile get away from me. There is a limit as to how much I want to store. Yet, I love having all that to choose from and seriously did need the supply when my husband was off work. So---balance, balance, balance:) I love seeing what you, and others, do. It gives me great ideas.

    1. Becky, The only time I put in grocery store items is when I purchase in bulk. Isn't it great that our pantries can increase or decrease according to our needs!

    1. Annabel, It'll be good at the end of the year to have a record of all our work too!

  5. I have a marble notebook(leftover from one of the kids) that I keep track of my stockpile. I have the shelves all numbered and the buckets lettered. They match up to a page in the notebook. Everyone knows that when they bring something up from the stockpile they have to mark "the notebook". I go through our stockpile twice a year to make sure its accurate. It works for us.
