The Ways of My Household: 1/14/2018

Our temperatures went from frigid cold to the upper 60’s and lower 70’s this week!  We’ve been walking around in shirt sleeves and had the doors open!  It’s been a good week for airing out the house!   But now, today … the temps have fallen and it’s cold again!!!   The respite from the cold was nice while it lasted!

I canned 7 more quarts of navy beans and added them to my pantry.

I made deviled eggs this last week for us to snack on, they are low carb and we like them!  Win!  Win!

I ran out of my simple homemade cleaner this week so I made some more.  Here's how I make it ... in a recycled window cleaner bottle I add 1 cup of plain ole rubbing alcohol and 1 teaspoon of Dawn dishwashing liquid.  Next, I finish filling up the bottle with water, give it a good shake and it’s ready to use.  I’ve tried several other homemade cleaners that were all good but I always seem to come back to this one.  For some reason that hint of alcohol smell just screams ‘clean’ and ‘disinfected’ to me, not to mention it doesn't require any special ingredients and it's super easy to make!

I was blessed with a box of fabric scraps from a reader this week.   These are not bits and pieces of useless scraps but good size, some already cut into useable size pieces, scraps.  Some, I would not consider scraps at all.   Needless to say, I was happy, happy, happy to receive them.  (Thank you again Bobbi!)

My husband saw a hatchet lying on the side of the road and he stopped and picked it up.  It was in really good shape and I’m sure whoever lost it is sorry.

We learned this week that our Sam’s Club is one of the 63 that are being closed across the country.  This week they were giving 25% off of all purchases so we went and purchased meat, shredded cheese and water.  Next week is 50% off but we knew that if we waited all the meats would be gone by then and 25% off is better than regular price.  We used the reward points we earned last year and walked out of the store with zero out of pocket.  The meat part of our pantry looks alot healthier now!!!

I strained out the ‘used up’ comfrey from the comfrey oil I’m making and added new dried comfrey leaves and root.  I did the same thing with the plantain oil I’m making that will go in the comfrey salve as well.   I should be ready to make comfrey salve in a couple of weeks.

We continue to cook from scratch, feed the compost bin and do all our normal money saving things that are second nature to us.

  1. How nice to receive the fabric! WIN
Our closest Sam's is staying open. 2 others in the city are closing - but a little too far for me to travel alone (in my opinion)
Good going on getting some deals.
    Have a great week.

  2. It sounds likes you had a good week Patsy. I'm in Alabama and we had two days of warmer weather, but it has turned cold again. I have to admit I'm pretty over the cold!

  3. I am so sorry to hear that your Sam's is one of the 63. I saw a post that they will refund your member ship fees if you elect to do so. They were also offering a 3 month extension for members so I went over and entered our information wondering if they would since ours expired Dec. 31. They did! Do you have Costco?

We got so many great grocery deals this week. Bacon and sausage was really a good buy and spiral hams were 99 cents a pound. I picked out a ham and it was sticky all over because the glaze packet was leaking. My husband went to ask the meat man if they had some wet wipes to clean up my hands. He came over and asked if I wanted the glaze packet and after I said no he put a $4 off sticker on it! We put it in a big produce bag to bring it home at which point I just put it in the sink and washed it off. We got that 9 pound ham for $5!

My husband repaired the drain in my bathroom sink saving us $300 over having a plumber do the job. Our utility bill was shocking when it came in spite of keeping the heat set low. I was thankful that I had let extra money accumulate in that budget and was able to pay the bill. My parents offered us their week at a lake house that we and they own in partnership along with 10 others. They just asked that we pay the maintenance fees and we will also use their spring time for the same deal. I cashed in my credit card rewards to cover those fees. Two weeks of vacation for free!

    Have a good week!

  4. I stayed out of the grocery stores this week except for milk and 2 jars of Kraft Peanut Butter that was on half price.
Otherwise I've been using up what I have on hand. I made a big pot of soup, roasted veg, made a chicken, rice & greens casserole and a vegetarian curry. I froze some of this, took a few meals to an elderly neighbour and ate the rest with some salads mixed in.
I've just gone through the freezer and took out a few things to defrost that I will cook up tomorrow. I also took out some chilli that I'd already cooked so I think I will keep that for two lunches (serve it over toast to stretch it) and have some coleslaw on the side to use that up as well.
I'll go to the grocery store on Tuesday to pick up some fresh fruit & veg. I've checked the flyers this week and there is nothing that jumps out at me to buy for the pantry but I'll check to see if there are any in-house specials that might be useful.

    1. Margie, isn't it a blessing when our diligent work pays off in the form of NOT having to buy groceries every week or payday???

  5. Dear Patsy,
I didn't know this about Sam's so I looked it up and the one closest to us (still 60 miles away) is staying open, but the one a little farther from us is closing. My husband is going to call to see if they are having any specials like yours. Thank you for mentioning this!
This week we planted kale and lettuce and I dehydrated apple slices. The apples were on sale for 5lbs for $1, one day only. The limit was 10 lbs so that is what we bought. Then of course yesterday we canned bone broth. I have also been meal planning and sticking to the budget, using what we have on hand and shopping sales. We are still on track with our allowances, though we did make an exception and went out to eat for our anniversary. We don't do this often so we thought we would treat ourselves and it was inexpensive compared to what we could've done. I also saved some tissue paper from a gift I received. I iron it on low heat and it looks like new! I get weird looks for this lol. And we are planning a trip to the city next month so with part of my allowance I bought a gift card to Hobby Lobby for 10% off. So I will get this back plus a few dollars for planning ahead. We also installed smoke detectors in our home as it didn't have any! That was about it for the week besides daily household duties and taking care of John, who turned 6 months on Monday!

    1. Happy Anniversary Kelsey!!! If I had the opportunity to buy 5 lbs of apples for $1 I would too! That's a great price! I save tissue paper too but never thought about ironing it, I'll remember this though now! You are a smart and wise shopper and I love reading how you work your allowance to stretch it! You have your hands full with a 6 month old baby but yet you still work the deals. You go girl!!!

  6. Hi Patsy, I found you through Annabelle. Great deals you got at Sam's. The 2 Sam's closing 30 mins from us charge more than the one right down the street from me so even after the 25% off they're still higher. They were only selling what was already out, the rest was being loaded and shipped to other stores, I'm in the western suburbs of Illinois. Sadly they might all be closing next year. Our neighbors a General Manager and he was notified that if these other stores don't triple profits they might go under altogether. That would be a real shame.
I also like the smell of rubbing alcohol in cleaners, especially since that darn flu bug is going around. Take Care, Patti Ann

    1. Patti Ann, Welcome to the A Working Pantry family! Our Sam's club pulled everything out of the stock in the store and put it on the floor. There was lots and lots of stuff but it was leaving quickly as people were purchasing it by the flatbeds and buggies full. This week is 50% off and then next week is 75% off. I don't think they're shipping their stock out to other stores here. I haven't noticed a big price difference (a small one, yes) in the Sam's Clubs further afield from us but that's a real bummer that your Sam's Club store's prices were still higher after the 25% off, then others.

  7. that's so nice for your reader to send that. What joy to go through to see what you have! So sorry your Sam's club is not staying open. I just wonder if they should refund some of your membership fees or something. Probably not but it is a thought. Ours is open still but we had decided not to renew this year. Have a great day!

    1. Vickie, our membership is up for renewal soon so requesting a refund wouldn't apply to us. I haven't heard that getting a refund of your membership fees is an option though, it might be, I just haven't heard anything about it. This whole thing is just so sad!

    2. When I looked our Sam's up to see if it was closing, a lot of the headlines said that Wal-Mart will refund your membership fee, but I don't know the details on this. It would be worth looking into for anyone faced with this.

  8. I'm sorry your Sam's Club is closing. At least they gave you all warning...some stores just closed up and the workers found out when they got there to report for work. :( That was sure nice of your friend to send you that beautiful fabric. What a blessing indeed!
