Our Journey to a Mortgage Free Home ... #6

(Previous posts can be found HERE.)

 We have the land ...

We have the house ...

and now it's time to give the house a foundation ...

First we had to get a permit, dig the footer to very rigid specifications, have the digging inspected and then we could finally get the concrete poured.  You see those thin long pieces of metal ... those are hurricane straps that had to, by law, be installed.  Yep, we live in hurricane country!

The footer was deep and wide ...

Another view ...  my dear husband worked so hard ...

A closer look ... it had to have a final inspection before my husband could start laying the blocks for the actual foundation.

After the footer finally cured ... TA-DA ... my husband laid the first block for the foundation!

My husband laid block after block after block ...

and there had to be pillows laid underneath the house too (for support of the house) ...

Making progress ... see the little air flow vent ... there were so many small details that had to be included.  Do you see the clip board with the orange looking piece of paper on it.  That was our building permit which had to be displayed on the outside of the house at all times.  If the building inspector had come by and it had not been displayed, we would have been fined!

More air flow vents ...

I'm sorry that this is not a very good picture, but you can see that the foundation is completed.  The house is ready to be lowered down on it and tied down with the hurricane straps ... and inspected again!

So, what do you think so far ... ain't she pretty????

Until next time,

  1. Wow, Patsy!!!!!

The sheer tenacity that was required just to see this foundation stage through is just amazing! Your husband did a wonderful job!

These things take time, and just will not be rushed!! Hopefully, these tougher tasks make others easier and more enjoyable!

  3. Looks like you've got a good sized crawl space.

    1. Joy, that was one thing my husband was adamant about having so he would have room to work underneath it without having to craw.

  5. Patsy, I am interested in the timeframe of all of this house and land project. In what year did you start, and when was it 'officially' (in your eyes) completed?

Have a lovely day. It's wet here in Queensland!

    1. Rachel, we started in 2007 and we're still working on it. We are paying as we go so availability of finances has factored in also.

  6. I am impressed that y'all did the foundation yourselves. My husband and I have spent the past year building our own home. The foundation is one of the few things we hired out. We needed a very good foundation since it would be holding up so much weight with our ICF house. I am excited to see the rest of your journey. I am blogging about our adventure at http://anewhomeinthecountry.blogspot.com.

    1. Dawn, a solid foundation was crucial for us as well and with all the legal regulations there was not much chance that it would be anything else.

  7. It is fascinating watching the process. What a lot of hard work has gone into your house but that makes it all the more satisfying.

  8. My Grandmother's favourite saying was "where there's a will, there's a way" and I feel this suits you and your husband perfectly. I'm really enjoying watching your home come to life, Patsy.
Looking forward to the next episode,
