Weekend Assignment: Pantry Spot Check

Before we get started with today's entry I want to thank Marie W. for her generous donation.  Thank you Marie, I am so thankful and your sweet note of encouragement lifted my spirits.

I'm finally getting back around to doing our weekend assignments.  I hope they are beneficial to you in helping you keep your pantry well-stocked!

In this post we're going to check on our rice (any variety).

If, for whatever reason, you couldn’t go to the grocery store at all for a month, how long would your current supply of rice (any variety) last your family?

  1. Bluey will eat rice, or as he calls it 'Bird Seed', if he has to. He would rather eat a curry with vegetables than have it with rice. He is happy to have bread to soak up the curry gravy. Anyways we have more than enough rice to have it two or three times a week. I got a bit carried away and bought 5kg's of it on special at the beginning of January.

    1. Jane, "Bird Seed" ... I had to chuckle at Bluey's name for rice! I buy rice in bulk and after putting it in the freezer for a few days to get rid of any possibility of insect eggs hatching out at a later date, I let it come to room temperature and vacuum seal it in jars. It lasts a really long time using this method.

    2. That would be a good description of my Dad's opinion of rice! I try really hard not to serve it when he visits.

  2. I am OK for brown rice (have 5 kg and do not store more due to shorter shelf life) but basmati rice is running low and a new 10kg bag is actually on my grocery list for this week.

Mind you, having quickly worked out how many meals this would make for my family, we'd still be ok for a month of one rice-based meal every day, for the three of us, and there'd even be a little left over to share with the dog, in case her own food was running low.

    1. Allegra, we like basmati rice too and yes, we've been known to cook up a pot of rice for the dogs when their food was running low! Rice is a very versatile dish!

  3. I checked my supply of rice and if we had a meal everyday, we would be good for about 5 weeks. I want to add brown rice to my pantry and have it on my list for this week's shopping trip. Paula in Kansas

  4. We are OK on amounts. Brown basmati rice small bag, white rice small bag, wild rice 2 bags, Risoto lg bag. We just started eating rice again. I found I can make it in the bread machine and it turns out really nice. I have an older glass stove top and it was nasty every time :( We are not picky eaters. I am just starting to use rice again little by little. I thought of buying a rice cooker but storage in 800 ft did not justify purchase. We would be fine for a month.

    1. Patti, living in a small house means we evaluate every purchase doesn't it?

  5. I have a little over 20lbs of rice. We would be fine for a month. I am actually doing a pantry challenge for February. It will help me clean out my freezers of my garden veggies. I already went thru half of my pantry reorganizing it. I try to do it twice a year. I'm off work tomorrow so I will work on it some more.

    1. Marybeth, I clean and reorganize my pantry twice a year too. It helps me keep things rotated and aware of what I have.

  6. I have a galon jar of white and a half gallon of brown plus about a quart of basmati. That will last for months with only two of us here.

  8. When there are Mahatma rice coupons my siblings and I all usually stockpile enough rice for at least 3 months. We are in the process now- with coupons-- adding to a still existing good stockpile. Cheap rice - usually about 10 to 20 cents for a 1 pound bag.

    1. Sue, knowing how much your family will consume of a specific item is so important. It keeps you from stocking a lot of something that your family doesn't eat much of ... which translates into more space to stock things they will eat!

  11. Hi Patsy, I have been accessing the same thing myself with rice and other grains... I definitely need to stock more. I also wanted to mention that in our preparedness series, if we cover a topic that you have touched upon also, drop me a link in the comment box and I will include it in my post. I have been so behind on my blog reading with my relatives visiting the last 3-months and I would love to include any information you share on the pertaining subjects as well (especially with all your experience). Have a lovely weekend. Love, JES
