The Ways of My Household: 4/15/2018

We worked on our shed a combined 20 hours this week.  At an average of $23 per hour we saved $460 by doing the work ourselves.   (We got the doors made and installed!)
I made a trip to JoAnn’s Fabric this week and by shopping sales and using coupons saved $107.85.
My husband has been saving his allowance for a tool he has been wanting, he found it this week … and it was on clearance!  He saved $125.00!!!
I saved $81.32 off two dresses I purchased. Yes, I shop sales and use coupons when shopping for clothing too!   I’ve really gotten to the place where I desperately need some new dresses so it was time to bite the bullet and just do it.
I did a lot of weeding this week and gave the weeds to the chickens.  They loved them!
I gave everything growing a fertilizer feeding this week.  It should give everything a jump start and put the plants, trees, herbs, bushes, etc on their way to a good growing season.
By far the most important thing that happened this week is that we became grandparents again!!!  Our little one was premature and we had some anxious moments off and on all week, but all seems to be going well now.
My Vicky Challenge savings this week come to ... $774.17.  Add that amount to the total of $1774.13 since March 21st, 2018 and our savings thus far are ... $2548.30.
We continue to cook from scratch, feed the compost bin and do all our normal money saving things that are second nature to us.
That's it for me this week, how have you built up your pantry or saved money this week?

  1. Congratulations on the new grandbaby!!! I will pray for that precious little one. Those new grandchild days are the best. We have six. How many do you have?

Hubby continues to work on the painting project. We did all our usual stuff to save here. I really wanted to pay for a car wash this week but put it off because I knew it was supposed to rain today and it poured and washed the cars for free. Hubby cut a huge bunch of George Lindsey Tabor azaleas for me before the rain came. I was afraid it would be the end of them but they look okay. We bot some good grocery deals and lots of very cheap TP this week.

We were so blessed by our church today. We are taking the scary step of moving from a church without a building to going into a permanent facility. This has caused quite a bit of discussion pre announcement of the details. We were blessed to find out that we are moving to the inner city. Some might find this shocking but it is what we are about and it will allow us to serve our community better. We are so excited by this step of faith. You might wonder why I would post this. Well, it is a way of our household to serve those less fortunate in our community and we are so, so blessed by it.

I hope the storms have moved past you and all is well there.

    1. Lana, Thank you, this is our 4th grandchild and each one is so near and dear to our hearts. The azaleas here are in full bloom and are breathtakingly beautiful. I want to add some azaleas to our landscaping but am waiting for a good sale or clearance find. I love how the way of your household is to serve those less fortunate in your community, I hope and pray that much success in this endeavor is in the future for everyone involved.

    2. My uncle used to propogate azaleas and sell them but it has never been successful for me. I have been tempted to try with the George Lindsey Tabor variety since they are so hard to find.

  2. Congratulations on the arrival of such a precious little parcel. I hope bubby continues to grow and thrive after the early arrival.

    1. Thank you Jane. We are so excited to meet this little one!

  3. A new grandbaby!!! How wonderful Patsy. So glad he/she is doing better!

  4. Hello Patsy and everyone and what a wonderful saving for doing all that work yourselves on the shed :). Fantastic your husband was able to get the tool he was after on clearance too, I bet he did a happy dance as well.

Our Vicky challenge added up to $133.05 this week in savings and the total of our Vicky challenge since March 21 is $4667.34 in savings.

    Financial -
    - Banked more money into our home deposit savings account bringing us to 24.76% of the way there.
    - DH and I made $57 this week from DH doing a mowing job and I from selling saved seeds from the gardens on the internet. DH purchased some weed killer and put the rest in the home emergency kitty to build it up since our car battery purchase and I downloaded mine and banked it to build up the pantry budget deficit from our February pantry stock up.

    Purchases -
    - Purchased a new back brace on special and picked up medications on a bulk script saving $111.90 over the usual prices of the back brace and buying each box of medication separately.

    Home organisation -
    - We deep cleaned the entire inside of the house and DH pressure cleaned the front and back verandas and the house and windows and screens ready for our rental inspection. By the way we passed with flying colours as usual :).

    In the kitchen -
    - Cooked all meals and bread from scratch.

    In the gardens -
    - Planted 62 broad bean seeds saving $4.65 over purchasing them and planted a 9mt row of garlic in the vegetable gardens. The garlic is already sprouting :).
    - DH & I trimmed the basil, sweet potato and rose bushes and DH whipper snipped and mowed all of the house lawns.

Now we are tired and took the day off today apart from fertilising the gardens as the house sparkles inside now.

    1. Sewingcreations15, It sounds like both you and your husband deserve that day off after all that work! You got a lot accomplished!

  5. Patsy thank you so much for your encouragement :).

Meant to write above to congratulate you on the arrival of a beautiful new grandbaby and glad everything turned out okay after the rollercoaster ride to get there. Congratulate the new parents for us too.

  6. Congratulations Grandma! I hope baby and mommy are doing well.
The shed is getting there. The doors look great. I am glad your husband was able to get the tool he wanted on sale.

We finally had 3 nice days this week. Heat was turned off, windows were opened and laundry was hung outside. Now it is cold and rainy again. We had a busy week. We helped at a Cancer fundraiser and won some prizes too. My son brought lots of goodies home from his job at the end of the night that would have gone in the garbage. I gave some to a friend and Hubby and I are bringing some to work for our coworkers. We have been cat and house sitting for a neighbor so it has been fun playing with the cats. The rest of my week is here:

    1. Making Cents of It All, thank you! Mommy and baby are doing well. Our weather has been crazy too, to say the least! Glad your son had the foresight to bring the goodies home and it was nice of you and your hubby to share!

  7. I guess I missed this! Congratulations on the new grandbaby! Glad to read that all is well now. Nancy
