Making a Strawberry Barrel: Part 2

Here's part 2 of how my hubby is making a strawberry barrel …

(Part 1 can be found HERE.)

This is where we left you in the last post …

A six inch hole was cut in the bottom of the barrel next for a pipe that will run down the center of the barrel.

Looking down from the top at the hole in the bottom of the barrel.

Next, it was time to cut the six inch PCV pipe and drill it full of holes.  Why, you ask ...

… because this pipe is going to house composting material and worms in the center of the barrel.  The holes are for the worms to move in and out of the pipe to and from the barrel carrying all their goodness/fertilizer to the soil around the strawberry plants.

That's enough for this post.  I'll continue in part 3.

A Working Pantry

She looketh well to the ways of her household … Proverbs 31:27

My pantry is intentional, purposeful, simple, practical, frugal and what works for my family.  It’s the food items and household supplies that keep my household running smoothly ready and available when they are needed.  It’s my contribution to our family’s economy and my work-from-home ‘job.'

  1. I thought the center would be to put water down water the berries. :) Worms and compost instead. What a good idea. I bury gallon planting pots 3/4 way in the soil next to tomatoes etc and add the compost and such and water into those pots. Now I have learned something new too ! Thanks. How are you gong to water the strawberry barrel ? And by the way I did find the bleach tablets at my Walmart. I never would have noticed it if you hadn't told us about it! Sarah

    1. Sarah, that's a good idea about burying the pots, adding compost to them and watering/fertilizing that way I had never thought about that! Thanks for sharing! Glad you found the bleach tablets!!!

    2. Sarah, we'll water the strawberries from the top of the barrel. I explain that in the final post in the series.
