Fall Cleaning!

For the next couple of weeks I'm going to be 'fall cleaning.'  It's time to get the house cleaned from top to bottom and get it ready for the holidays.  I don't know how much I'll be posting during this time so, if my posts become sparse, you'll know why.

Anybody else fall cleaning?

  1. I am fall cleaning. I'm tackling the kitchen lightly. Just one segment of cupboards at a time. I don't mind if it takes me a few weeks. It's REALLY bad :-(

Next up will be scrubbing baseboards. They are bad too.

    1. Elle, I've been gardening and canning and preserving food all summer long which didn't leave time to do any in-depth cleaning so the time as now come. I have 2 weeks to get mine done then I have to move on to something else.

    2. I hear ya! I've got my pre-freeze harvest of partially ripe tomatoes covering the entire kitchen island. Once I process those, I'll be done with preserving the 2019 harvest!

  2. We need to go through the house and get all the cobwebs down. Another big job that needs doing is clearing off our miles of kitchen counters and really deep cleaning the counters. The rest is putting everything outside to bed for the winter. Yesterday we had our semi-annual service on our heat pumps and there was a hand size spider right inside the attic when the tech went up there. (He came right back down the ladder and right downstairs!) Hubby killed that spider but when the tech came in after working under the house he said he saw another one under the house. Right now I am pretending that I do not know about it! But, what to do? We don't do whole house pesticides but I don't want to have them inside the house either.

    1. Lana, Oh my, I have visions of huge spiders running around everywhere. We don't do whole house pesticides as a general rule either but those huge spiders would have me doing some serious research about making a possible exception if I couldn't find anything else. You've got some serious spider issues!

    2. Spiders are a part of life in our area. My MIL freaked out when they moved to the NC mountains many years ago. But, I don't ever remember seeing huge spiders like these. Hubby is calling the pest control company now.

    3. Lana, spiders are common here but I have to say you got me on the size of your spiders. That is some big spiders!!!

    4. Here is what the pest control company said, spiders are not affected by pesticides so having them spray would do no good. Hopewell No Bites repels spiders and we use it in our screen porch and on our deck in the summer but I am leary of putting it in the attic and crawl space since we could just drive them into the house. The pest control guy was pretty surprised that we saw those huge spiders here. Hubby went under the house to see if he could see any to kill and capture to find out about them but did not see any.

    5. Lana, really!!! That surprises me, I thought pest control companies had a spray for spiders! You've got quite the situation on your hands! Good luck on finding a solution!

  3. I did my kitchen last weekend - then I switched my wardrobe over to my winter clothes so those two areas are sorted. This weekend I'm planning on tackling the bathroom! One step at a time.

    1. Margie, I'm starting with the kitchen which is the busiest part of our house. I've got a plan on what order to do different areas in and am working that plan.

    1. MamaHen, We're not expecting any company for the holidays but I like the idea of having my house cleaned and ready for the holidays. I just seem to enjoy them more!

  6. I am into week 2 of Autumn cleaning and am shattered! Have scrubbed the kitchen cupboards and kick boards, the fridge, all the windows, sills and surrounds, all the doors, radiators, skirting boards - I have discovered a big patch of mould behind a curtain in my daughter's room that is an issue that will have to be investigated - she never said a word about it! I have the carpets to "spot clean" and the bathrooms to deep clean - I hate every minute of doing it but will feel fantastic once it is done! Good Luck to everyone else doing this. It's a 5 bedroom house - cannot wait to downsize next year!

    1. Julia, that's the kind of deep cleaning I'm doing. As for the mold, oh my, that is a pretty serious problem. I hope you find the source and can get it taken care of quickly. Like you, fall cleaning is not my favorite thing to do, but I sure do like the end results!

  8. Hi Patsy and good on you all of our homes need a good clean from top to toe at times :).

We have started spring cleaning here in Australia. Each day we are working room by room but I have damp dusted everything in the home so far. We have deep cleaned the kitchen as our new 90 cm oven got installed along with lighting so that sparkles and half the lounge room is deep cleaned with the rest being done tomorrow. We have also cleaned inside windows as we have seen they were dirty too.

Good luck with the cleaning and hope it all sparkles as you do each room.

  9. I have finally finished canning for the season this week! Whoohoo!!!! Only thing left to preserve is cooking up some pumpkins, which is minimal at this point. I had so much to do this year, we just missed cleaning the house in time for Thankgiving (which for Canadians was last weekend). However, now that the canning is completed (the steam from all that canning leaves residue on the ceilings/walls, thus why cleaning is delayed until it's done), we will be working on some fall cleaning, so the house is ready for Christmas. We have already taken the area rugs out on our back deck and steam cleaned them, while it was still warm out, allowing them to dry in the sun. They were rolled up and set aside until the living & dining room area could be cleaned. The kitchen needs a thorough cleaning as well, including cleaning/organizing many of the cupboards. Looking forward to that!

    1. Rhonda, I've pretty much finished canning for 2019 too (with a few exceptions), hence the fall cleaning!!! I started in the kitchen for all the reasons you mentioned, I'm not finished but it's already looking much better!!!
