While at Lowe's the first of the week hubby did what he does this time of year, asked if they had any soil, mulch, etc that they needed to get rid of ... that they needed cleared out.
We have gotten some really good deals for the past 2 years but I think this years is the best. Yes, indeed, they had some pine mulch with soil enhancer that they needed to clearance out (it had been around since 1997, we were told, and they needed to get rid of it.). Hubby told the department manager, depending on the price, he would be interested in it.
The department manager went to talk with someone who could give him a price to offer and authorize the clearance if we decided to purchase it. The department manager wasn't gone long when he came back and told us the computer showed they had 167 bags and we could have them for $.15/bag ... yes, fifteen cents. The regular price was $4.98/bag. Hubby told him we would take all 167 bags and that's what we did!
Today, I started spreading the mulch and after several hours of lifting bags, tearing open bags and spreading the mulch, my everything hurts all over!!! I didn't even get half of it done so I'll be spreading mulch for several days.

ReplyDeleteDebbie, thank you! We were very pleased to get it.
DeleteThat's amazing! It looks great in your garden, too!
ReplyDeleteDeanna, thank you!
DeleteThat bargain is just amazing! Kudos to your husband for his cleverness!
ReplyDeleteSue, we're both big bargain hunters and sometimes it pays off really big!
DeleteWhat a wonderful bargain for something you needed anyway!! Good for you! Jane
ReplyDeletelejmom, we wouldn't have purchased it if we hadn't known how we could or would use it. A bargain is not a bargain if you can't use it ... we try to always remember that.
DeleteThat is a great deal. Be aware, pine mulch will be highly acidic and may not be compatible with all your plantings. Food will not like it.
ReplyDeleteElle, yes, pine mulch is highly acidic, it will do well for our blueberries but other than that we're not really placing it around food, not without mixing it with other soil.
DeleteOh Wow what a deal!!!!! I never would have thought of asking/checking on a outdated item. Love hearing this kind of story.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, it never hurts to ask!
DeleteHow wonderful! And yes, I am well familiar with the vast number of bags it takes to mulch a bed and how 'my everything hurts' after, lol.
ReplyDeleteterri, LOL, it's a unique kind of aching, isn't it!!!
DeleteThat was a wonderful deal, and it is certainly worth remembering to ask!
ReplyDeleteGill, we think so!
DeleteWow! Don’t wear yourself out!
ReplyDeleteJust Got To Eat, this is a busy season indeed but I'm trying to take time to rest. I'm not as young as I used to be!!!
DeleteWow, what a great deal! Looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAfter one of our diy jobs, my kid said that "my legs hurt, my back hurts and I hurt" :) Hope you feel better. Maybe a long soak in the tub.
Kathy, I think your kids nailed it!!!
