Planning for Fall Planting!

Our summer garden is keeping us pretty busy right now but that's not the only gardening that's own our minds.  We're also starting to think about and put into motion plans for our fall garden.

We were given some small cabbage collard seedlings (about 1/2 to 1 inch tall) a couple of weeks ago.  They were all in a small shallow tray together and needed to be potted up into their own individual cups.

As you can see in the picture, that's what I did.  They have grown to about 2 - 3 inches in height and are doing well.  Towards the end of  next month we'll set them out in our raised beds and containers.

If all goes well we'll be enjoying fresh from the garden collards towards the end of the year and of course, we'll be canning enough to last until it's time to start the process again in 2022.

  1. For my challenge to add something free to my pantry, I added, 4 pkgs. of hog jowls and 4 pkgs. of pork neck bones. They were given to us by a friend who had a hog processed and didn't care for those pieces.

  2. Another free item added to my pantry today. I cooked a whole chicken and divided it and broth up into meals for the freezer. There were 4 cups of broth left so my hero of a husband filled two pint jars and got them going in the smart canner. Well, I guess we had the cost of the lids but I still consider it a freebie. Having that small canner ready to use on my counter has been a real game changer since it is so easy to just load a few jars and get it going.

  3. I had to smile when I saw this post this morning. Just yesterday I started thinking about the fall garden. Instead of buying broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower starts this year I will be planting them myself in small containers to be transplanted into the raised bed in the middle of August along with some fall beets. My spring beets are just about ready.

    1. Cookie, now is the time to get those fall seeds planted in order for them to be ready in mid August for fall gardening! We didn't plant spring beets this year but do plan to plant some this fall.

  4. Since my spring peas did absolutely nothing, I may attempt a Fall crop and plant some in August while the soil is still warm, as late in the month it does begin to cool significantly overnight. But in the Midwest, Fall could be Sept. to mid-Nov., or it could be Sept. only, with below freezing temps by Columbus Day. I'll just try ... and I plan to get what I can, in terms of squash, apples, grapes, and other end-of-season crops from the farm stands to shore up my pantry for the winter.

  5. I watched a very interesting YouTube today about peppers. What I did not know was that pepper plants are perennials so they can be overwintered inside. I had quit growing peppers because of the low yield but if I could start out the spring with an established plant it would be worth trying again.

    1. Lana, I did not realize that peppers were perennials! That's interesting, I wonder how long they would continue to grow outside in our area as we typically have mild winters? Hmmm, I may have to experiment with this idea this year.

    2. As long as the overnight temps do not go below 40 they would be fine outside. He recommended potting them and moving them inside or into a greenhouse if the temp with stay over 40. Check out 'Next Level Gardening' on YouTube because he shows how to cut them back and prepare them to overwinter.
