A Working Pantry Boot Camp: 7/18/21

How did everyone do with last week's challenge?  It was all about the color white ...

For this week's challenge let's think about the color white, add something white to your pantry.

Here's what I added to my pantry to meet the challenge ...

Great Northern Beans (I'm going to go ahead and get these canned up as soon as I can.  Having ready to heat and eat beans on the pantry shelf is a convenience item for us.)

Dental Floss

Hominy

Shoe Peg Corn

Pickling and Canning Salt (I had a really hard time finding this! I was getting low with what I had on hand so I kept searching until I found some.)

Off-white items include:

Organic Cane Sugar

Sauerkraut

Minced garlic

Pine Nuts

How did you do with this week's challenge?  (Other 'white' items on my list to purchase are powdered milk and potato flakes.  I haven't purchased them yet, but they are on my list.)

For this week's challenge let's play opposites ... last week we did white/off-white, this week let's do black/brown.  Add items to your pantry this week that are the color of black/brown.

(You can always substitute something totally different if a particular assignment doesn’t work for you. Just tell us what you’re substituting.)

I can't wait to see how you build up your pantry with this challenge!

  1. I added 8 kg flour to my pantry; my farmer husband is predicting a sharp rise in flour prices for the consumer this autumn. ( Although not a rise in the prices the farmer is paid, sadly) This is because of the high temperatures this summer which will likely cause a reduced grain harvest.

    1. Gill, the farmer has a better handle on food supply issues then most think, I try to always listen to what the farmer has to say. Thanks for the tip!

    1. Gill, good for you, I think we've all gained a healthy respect for toilet paper.

  3. I love those canned up beans on my pantry shelves, too. I think they taste better than any other way of cooking beans.

I added a free loaf of white bread with iBotta, ten pounds of white potatoes, cream cheese, half and half and sour cream.

  4. I added 12 loaves of keto bread from Costco to the freezer

  5. Well....not sure if this counts, but I have white walls and white shelves in my tiny pantry. I took everything out and deep cleaned it. Now it looks very white! Then I completely reorganized everything. Also, I added a pkg of instant potatoes, two pounds of cane sugar, and two pkgs of instant cornbread muffin mix. The mixes were free and good for a last minute quick supper side. And to my fridge I added two big tubs of plain yogurt. To the pet pantry I added an old cream colored set of twin sheets.

  7. I added 6 bags of cauliflower to the freezer as well as a quart of homemade coconut milk and and a quart ofhomemade almond milk. Ten pounds of white basmati rice, 10 pounds of coconut flour for gluten free baking, baking soda. I don't know if this counts but I added 6 quarts of white peaches, which are actually off white in color to the freezer.

    1. Cookie, the white peaches definitely count! Do the coconut milk and almond milk freeze well? I've never tried freezing either. Basmati rice is our favorite rice!

    1. Your comment reminded me that I have some onions that need chopping and freezing!

  9. Patsy, I have only frozen coconut and almond milk that I make myself. They both freeze very well. The recipes I use make one quart that gets divided into smaller portions for easier use.

  10. I need to add flour and sugar to my pantry, but am waiting for it to go on sale. Sales here have been slim pickings for what's on my grocery list and I'm staying away from the stores, unless absolutely necessary. I have several major events in August, a trip with my daughter in late Sept., a trip with a couple of friends in mid-Oct., and I'll likely need to get my Mom to TX in late Oct. or early Nov. (depends on the availability of my siblings; I'm the oldest and only one that's retired, and they try and push things off on me -- but I'm pushing back). I'll also have a winter trip to TX in early 2022 -- mom wants me to come and stay for a month or so while she sorts and cleans out her winter place, preparing it to sell. So, anything I can save now can be allocated to those travel expenses.

    1. Lori, that's a lot of traveling and traveling isn't cheap, you're wise to plan ahead financially by making frugal decisions now. Sales are not very good in our area either and from everything I hear and read, food prices are only going to go up. I hope you can find a sale on flour and sugar soon.
