A Working Pantry Boot Camp: 7/26/21

I'm a day late getting this week's boot camp entry posted, but here you go ...

Last week's challenge was ...

Add items to your pantry that are the color of black/brown.

Here's what I added ...

Black Pepper

Pecan Halves (these will be put aside for holiday baking)

Chocolate Chips  (these also will be put aside for holiday baking)

Mixed Nuts (we like to snack on these)

Brown sugar

Refried Beans

Black Olives

... and of course I couldn't let this challenge go by without using it as an opportunity to restock my Hershey's milk chocolate bars!!!

How did you do with this challenge?

For this week's challenge we're going to go a different route ... a non-food route!  That's right, non-food!  My pantry is more than food and yours should be too.  The first non-food 'pantry' item that I'll be inventorying to see if I need to restock is batteries.  That's just one example of thinking outside the box with this week's challenge.

What non-food items will you be adding to your pantry?

(You can always substitute something totally different if a particular assignment doesn’t work for you. Just tell us what you’re substituting.)

  1. I need to check our batteries as well. I’m also looking at otc medications since fall is right around the corner.

  2. Yes! Chocolate is an essential pantry item! When you want it nothing else will do!

I restocked brown sugar and although it is not black or brown I added a #10 can of whole egg powder that we found at the discount grocery for 6.99. The expiration date is 2030! I was so happy to find that!

    1. Lana, that egg powder is a steal!!! I would have purchased it too!

I've learned that when I have a hunger for chocolate it's best to just go on and have it, otherwise I wind up eating everything else instead and still wanting chocolate ... eventually giving in and eating it!!!

  3. I really look forward to this each week. Your stock up looks yummy, we have similar tastes. I bought some black pepper, brown sugar, pinto beans, chili, instant chocolate pudding, and wasp spray ( the canister is black).

    1. Ginger, thank you! I should have done instant chocolate pudding! I'm going to add that to my grocery list!

  4. I added more peanut butter, molasses, maple syrup, roasted almonds and, of course, several 3 lb bags of semi-sweet chocolate chips which will stored for Christmas baking and fudge and sweetened cacao powder.

  5. I was on vacation last week and wasn't able to add to my pantry. I will make up for it this week. I cleaned out the linen closet two weeks ago, so I know I am good with otc medications and cough drops. For non food pantry items this week, I think I will be adding dish sop, toilet paper, and possibly a few Christmas gifts for the gift pantry. Oh, and yarn! :)

    1. Jennilee, those are some good 'non-food' ideas, I think I might steal a couple of them and do the same!

  6. I've been busy making pickles, pickling banana peppers, picking corn and making green tomato relish, so my something brown is eggs from my chickens! I need ibuprofen and emergen c so I will be adding that as my non food items.

  7. I am just catching up with the Boot Camp Challenges - so - for white I stocked up on long life milk - for brown it was cans of baked beans and, of course, more chocolate.

Non-food items are actually at the top of my list to add to the pantry. I actually did an inventory of my toiletries on the weekend and I actually only have a few things to top up and I'll be good for at least 6 months. I will check on kitchen cleaning items this week to see where I stand - not desperate for anything but I'd like to add a few more bottles of dish liquid, furniture polish and more garbage bags.

This is a great way to keep track of what needs to be taken care of over the next few weeks.

    1. Margie, not allowing your pantry to get desperate for anything allows you the luxury of being able to shop for the best prices. That's a winning situation!

  8. I stocked up on my dog's pet food. If he hadn't have needed some for his weekend at boarding, I wouldn't have gone to the store -- too tempting lately! Had a coupon from Meijer that was about to expire and I knew he was going to need some. I also added brown sugar to my "holiday stock up" list -- I'm running low and know they will put it on sale around Thanksgiving.

    1. Lori, Now is the time to start planning and preparing for items we'll need for holiday baking and as for pet food, it's wise to have a stock-up of that on hand too.

  9. Bluey brought home two boxes of salted caramel Tim Tams, that's 26 packets of these delicious chocolate biscuits. Into the freezer most of these will go.

    1. Jennilee, good for you! Playing catch-up is just a part of life here in our household! The end result is that we're keeping our pantry well-stocked!

  11. This week I bought coffee on sale 33% off. I bought 36 packs, which should take me well into the winter. My husband says that coffee crops have failed in several countries this year, so the prices are going to rise sharply. I added chocolate too!
