A Journal of My Days: 9/20/21

 It's been a busy day ...


I canned this chicken stew on Friday and today cleaned up the jars and added them to my pantry.


Today, I took 10 lbs of ground beef, added some onion, browned it and canned 10 pints.  I left out enough to make pizzas for the freezer tomorrow (or that's the plan).


This is the mixed vegetables (carrots, potatoes, celery and onion in chicken broth) I canned on Friday also.  Today, I washed and cleaned up the jars, labeled them and added them to the pantry.


In and around the canning and cleaning up jars I took a jaunt outside.  This is one of our pear trees and its dropping its pears.  I try to go out daily and pick them up before creatures get to them.  The plan is to make pear sauce.  I hope to get them in the crockpot tomorrow to start cooking them down.


While outside I decided to check on our sweet potatoes and dug one container.  All these came from one pot and we are so pleased.  We have more pots to dig that I'll work on as time permits over the next several days/weeks.

I spent a good bit of the morning outside cleaning up containers and getting them ready for fall planting.  I harvested peppers, brought them in, gave them a good washing, chopped them up and dehydrated them.  On my to-do list for tomorrow is to turn them into pepper powder. (I saw a container of pepper powder on a store shelf recently and my first thought was, 'I can do that!')  I plan to combine all the different varieties we have in the garden making our own unique blend!

On my 'to-do' list for tomorrow:

make pizzas for the freezer
grind dehydrated peppers into powder
start pears cooking down in crock-pot for pear sauce
harvest more peppers and dehydrate

    1. Laura, with so much uncertainty and things happening that I can't control, I'm trying to concentrate on what I can control and what will benefit my family in the months ahead.

  3. Does anyone make an electric pressure canner that I can use for meat?

    1. Practical Parsimony, I've not had any experience with electric pressure canners, maybe someone else will comment who has.

    2. Yes, you can use the Carey Smart Canner. I love mine. It makes canning so simple. They are available on Amazon and the price has come way down from what it has been for more than a year.

  4. What are you planning on doing with the pepper powder.
    We picked 3 five gallon buckets of tomatoes. That is on my agenda for tomorrow. Tomato basil soup and marinara sauce.

    1. Nancy, we'll use it for seasoning purposes, in soups, stews, casseroles, omelets, hamburgers and so much more.
