A Working Pantry Bootcamp: 9/26/21

How did you do with last week's challenge, it was 'different' wasn't it?

Here it is ...

For this challenge, we're going to think about fall colors.  We're going to add something to our pantry that is either orange, purple, brown or any combination of these three colors.

Here's what I added ...

home-canned ground beef ... (brown)

sweet potatoes from our garden ... (burnt orange)

home-canned beef broth ... (brown)

garden flag ... (brown, orange)
the color purple was a little more difficult but I managed it ... purple and orange socks!

How did you do?

For this week's challenge lets count the number of letters in your first name and add that many items to our pantry!

(You can always substitute something totally different if a particular assignment doesn’t work for you. Just tell us what you’re substituting.)

Until next time!

  1. We bought an orange battery operated fan for our preparedness pantry. Hopefully the color will help us see it in dim light so we don't trip over it.

    1. Lana, good idea! In a power outage in summer that fan will be like gold!

  2. Is this the day for orange, brown, and black things? Hope so. I was confused. I bought sweet potatoes and will go back for another 40 lbs. I got a pumpkin for the porch annd quart of freshly shelled purple hull peas. All this color were planned and not for this post. I also bought a B&M bread in a can. It is sealed in a can like green beans. We love the bread. Purple hull peas and sweet potatoes were delicious. The purple mums are on the front porch in a wire chicken and the pansies are in my concrete bunny. I think purple is sort of fall/Halloween color.

Was this the right day and post on which to post this?

    1. Practical Parsimony, the colors were orange, purple and brown, it looks like you hit all three! You did really well with purple ... purple hull peas and purple mums and pansies. I'm not familiar with B & M bread in a can. Where do you get it?

    2. I bought the B&M in Publix in their International Section. One Publix did not have it. But, a larger Publix did. Like I said, I had all these planned and did not do it just for this challenge, so I was pleased to find the challenge fit right in with plans.

    3. Practical Parsimony, we don't have any Publix near us, but will keep that in mind when I'm in an area that does have one.

  4. I put up jambalaya and pot roast (orange and brown) as freezer meals this past week. And my husband asked for Hershey kisses but he wanted just a little bag. Well a little bag is nigh on impossible to find anymore so I bought a larger bag, let him eat what he wanted then put the rest away. They may be wrapped in silver but they are brown on the inside! lol Oh and I accepted potatoes, onions, and red and orange and yellow bell peppers that my dil didn't want to store in their fridge/pantry. She'd bought it for freezer meals and had more than she needed. I missed out on the black and purple but I think I pretty much nailed the rest.

    1. Terri, yes, indeed you nailed it! I really like what you did for the freezer meals. I hardly every buy small bags of Hershey kisses, I prefer to buy the larger bag and freeze what I don't use. Sounds like you did well by accepting your DIL's surplus too, you really did well this week!

  5. I added carrots and with some of them restocked the freezer with carrot cake muffins made with almond flour. Chocolate chips for baking have gone sky high here. I found a good deal on Amazon for 6 bags of Nestle's dark chocolate chips for half the price of what they are locally. For the purple I rounded up all my purple cardstock to use making Halloween Cards.

    1. Cookie, chocolate chips for baking have increased in price here too ... and that's if you can find them. It really is hit and miss in the grocery stores around here, if you think you might need an item and see it, you'd best be getting it then. Your carrot cake muffins sound delicious!

Purple cardstock, yes ma'am ... Halloween cards, yes ma'am ... you are so sweet to send well wishes and encouragement using your talent of card making.

  6. For brown: homemade beef jerky, tea, coffee. Orange: orange Gatorade, homemade pumpkin bread for the freezer, frozen oj concentrate for freezer. Purple: grape flavor aid drink mix, purple gatorade, a few handfuls of possum grapes.
I like to keep Gatorade put back for times of illness. I also added some small bottles of Ginger ale for the same reason. And an extra box of tissues.
Your canning looks good. I will be canning grd beef soon, too.

  8. I added some carrots & sweet potatoes along with some more canned pumpkin for the orange and bags of brown sugar. I also bought a couple of bags of frozen berries which are all in the blue/purple family so I am covered! :-)

    1. Margie, you hit all three colors, good for you. The frozen berries are a good choice for the blue/purple option.

  9. I like to keep the Gatorade powder on hand. I buy big containers from Amazon. In the past, I was able to buy at our grocery stores in big tubs but couldn't find them. I like to keep these for when we're sick or the weather is very warm.

    1. Terri, powdered Gatorade would be a better choice for us than the bottled liquid version. Thanks for the reminder about the powder.

  10. Playing catch up after being away from home for a week. Limited my shopping the week prior to 9/27 to farmstand only. I picked up both butternut and acorn squash. Had planned to have part of the acorn for dinner one night and freeze the rest and never got to it. Both are still fine, after a week on the counter, so will get them processed for the freezer this week.
