A Journal of My Days: 1/24/23

Welcome to A Working Pantry and today's post!

if this is your first visit, we hope you find something that will make you want to come back.  If you are a regular reader, please know that you are appreciated so very much!  I love the little community of frugal living, like-minded, pantry building people we are building here and am happy that you've chosen to be a part of it!

I’ve started thinking about gardening for this year and have begun a list of what we’d like to plant.  The first 2 items on the list for spring planting, which starts in February for our area, are:  potatoes and cabbage.  Those aren’t the only two items, but they are the top two. This year I’m dividing my list up into 4 different planting categories:

Spring Planting (February and March)

Summer Planting (April, May, June)

Fall Planting (July and August)

Winter Planting (September and October)

I’ll filling in under each category what I want to plant during that season and adding the specific month to plant it as well.  For example, under Spring Planting, I’ve written:

Potatoes (February)

Cabbage (March)

I’m really focused on getting in enough water to keep my body well hydrated and one way I do that is to start every morning with a bottle of water.  Before I eat or drink anything else, I drink a bottle of water, usually as I’m preparing my breakfast.  When I’ve finished that bottle of water, I set the timer on my phone for 3 hours and when it goes off, I drink another bottle of water.  I do this throughout the day and usually by the end of the day, I have my water in for the day.  I started my day off that way this morning!

I woke up really tired this morning. Yesterday was a busy day that kept me hopping until the evening hours.  Often when I have a big day like that, I am tired the next day, so I take it easy and let my body rest.  That’s what I did today!

I was all set to make a pot of chicken and dumplings for our main meal of the day, but hubby asked if we could have it tomorrow instead, he wanted to prepare our main meal today.  I gladly agreed!  I really love that my husband enjoys cooking especially since he’s gotten good at doing the cleanup too!

I got my daily exercise in by replenishing the wood pile on the porch and by doing my usual Leslie Senone walk away the pounds video.  While I stacked wood hubby was doing other outside chores.  We tag team the chores so we can get them done sooner especially when the weather is cold or rainy outside.

But mostly I rested, and it felt good!  I watched several Youtube videos, answered emails, and comments here on A Working Pantry blog and took notes on things I wanted to remember.  Here’s some of what I watched or listened to:

2023 Sew With Me  (Do I or don’t I want to do this this year?  I have 4 quilts that I’m working on now, do I want to add another one?   Hmm, this IS actually ONLY one block per month!!!)

How to Make a Crumb Fabric Block (This would be a way to use up my small pieces of fabric!)

Which led to watching this video … Learn crumb quilting and make a tote bag with it video tutorial.  I really liked this gal’s method.

I noticed that a local family-owned grocery store is having a sale on chicken breast, 5 lbs for $6.95 (that makes it $1.39/lb) and ground beef for $2.79/lb.  I added both of those items to my ongoing grocery list that I keep on my phone and will purchase some of both when we do our bargain shopping later in the week.

That's it for me today!

From the archives, I wrote and published this series back in 2015 ...

I hope you've found something helpful or inspiring in today's post!

Until tomorrow ...

  1. Yay you for starting your day with water. I do too. Rest is wise It took me too long to learn that!

I broke a tooth today and fortunately they could fit me in tomorrow at the dentist. There are some things to consider in light of my EDS when we decide on treatment.

We stopped in Dollar General and bought 4 Christmas ornament kits that make four each and six stockings for $2.98. The grandchildren will enjoy making ornaments next year and we can share some kits with neighbors and friends who do foster care.

    1. Lana, I'm so sorry about your tooth, but thankful your dentist could see you so soon. I need to check our local Dollar General and see if they have any Christmas ornament kits, that's a great idea!

  2. The crumb quilting looks like fun. I never heard of that! I used to do Leslie's videos but walk on treadmill now. I need to mix it up!

    1. Angela, with fabric being so expensive, I'm always on the lookout for ways to use all of it and this crumb quilting idea seems so practical and of course the end product is pretty as well.

Mixing up our exercise routines gives different muscles a workout plus gives us some variety ... and sometimes I need that variety!
