A Journal of My Days: 1/25/23

Welcome to A Working Pantry and today's post!

if this is your first visit, we hope you find something that will make you want to come back.  If you are a regular reader, please know that you are appreciated so very much!  I love the little community of frugal living, like-minded, pantry building people we are building here and am happy that you've chosen to be a part of it!

I awoke to the sweet sound of birds chirping this morning!  It was such a beautiful sound, it was as if they were saying, ‘spring is coming, spring is coming,’ or maybe that’s what I wanted them to say as I’m ready for spring to come!  At any rate it was a beautiful sound and reminder of the intricacy of the world our great God created for us to enjoy.  It was also a really great way to start my day!

I did a bit of sewing today …

I worked on the quilt my sister and I are doing …

This is the step we're on now.

Can you tell what it is?

I stitched up a pillowcase to go with the ones the tween girls in the beginner’s sewing class I’m teaching are making.   They’re making pillowcases to donate to Ryan’s Cases for Smiles and I want to stitch up several to add to what they will be sending.  This is the 3rd one I’ll be contributing.

While sewing, I listened to this podcast by Carla Moore and Kathy Pollard from Looking Up With Kathy and Carla, on a mix of things, but the main topic was forgiveness.  It dove tails so well with the series I’ve written on forgiveness over on my other blog, From This Heart of Mine.  This is their second podcast and in both they have ended the podcasts with a random question.  In this episode they asked, ‘how do you freshen your home!’  Ladies, I’ve really enjoyed both of their episodes and encourage you to give them a try.

I started working on the celery I purchased on Saturday.  My method of preservation consists of cutting off the base of the stalk, washing and cleaning up each rib, slicing each rib into about ¼ inch thickness, filling snack bags, putting those snack bags inside a quart size freezer bag and then popping them into the freezer.  I did 2 stalks and have 3 left.

I
made chicken and dumplings today for our main meal of the day!

Yum, they were so good!

I used some of the chicken I cooked over the weekend.

We're experiencing heavy rains today and it's forecast to continue until late tonight.  Heavy rain makes our internet behalf differently, so I decided to go ahead and post this day's doings, up until this point, just in case!

That's it for me today!

From the archives, I wrote and published this series back in 2015 ...

I hope you've found something helpful or inspiring in today's post!

Until tomorrow ...

  1. HI Patsi
Ive been reading your blog for some time. I really enjoy all the info.
I grew up with my parents always having a pantry. My husband not so much !
It took some time but he eventually came around.
I wanted to ask you about your chicken and dumplings. I’ve not seen anything like that. Do you have a recipe? I grew up and do the one that you put on top at the end.

    1. Anonymous, making chicken and dumplings is more of a method than a recipe. I put cooked chicken, seasoning, salt and enough broth (2-3 quarts) to hold the dumplings once I drop them in a large pot. Then, I make my dumpling dough using plain flour, a dollop of shortening and milk. I make a dough, roll it out as flat as I can get it, cut the dough into approximately 2-inch pieces and once the broth/chicken mixture has come to a gentle boil, I start dropping the pieces of dough in one at a time, stretching them a bit as I drop. I let them cook/simmer 5 - 10 minutes and serve. It is one of our favorite winter meals and our home-canned chicken or any leftover chicken is perfect for using. I hope this helps, the next time I make chicken and dumplings, I'll try to remember to take pictures and do a tutorial. Thanks for being a follower!
