Starting a New Raised Bed: 3/19/23

This actually happened last week, I'm just now getting around to posting it ...

I'm making a new raised bed, (actually, I'm extending one we're already working on, and this is what it looked like after I got through wrestling with the wind to get the cardboard down!  (I've been saving cardboard since last fall for this project.)

It was quite windy that day and I got a good workout!  If you're wondering why the cardboard is first, it's to smother out the grass and kill it off.  The blocks for the sides will come next and then the soil/compost ... then the planting can begin!

Until tomorrow ...

  1. That will be a nice addition to your garden. That wind sure has been brisk lately!

We actually put in a lowered bed, hehehe. Our antique pineapple post bed has just gotten too tall as we age and as mattresses have gotten so thick. So Hubby built a platform to go under our box spring and mattress so we could just sit it on the floor with the pretty bed around it. It is working very well.

    1. Lana, believe it or not, I have actually thought of doing the same thing with our bed for the same reasons! Great minds!

    2. You can also purchase a 6 inch platform but they are about $135. Hubby had everything he needed in the garage. It is so nice to be able to sit on the side of the bed!

  2. Do y’all grow strawberries? I’m thinking of trying to grow them this year.

    1. Lee Ann, we do! We grow them in strawberry barrels my husband made.

  3. You both made me smile. We had a quite tall bed and frame and when we swapped mattresses bought a different type of foundation since the mattress doesn't have a foundation. Gosh but it's nice not to have to 'hop' up into bed, lol. I can easily sit on the edge and just lie down. Not the way it was before though!

Patsy, I know it took some strength to fight those winds to get that cardboard down. I promise you I've felt nearly airborne at times around here with wind when carrying cardboard across the yard!
