A Journal of My Days: 5/26/23

The weather has turned cooler, in fact so much cooler that hubby and I needed to wear a jacket this morning while mowing the yard and doing yard work.  We were quite surprised!

In the Garden: I did more planting this week:  dill, zucchini, okra, and eggplant.

I harvested cabbage, spring green onions, radishes, swiss chard, and squash!

We started digging our potatoes and were blessed with a good yield.  The rest will be dug sometime during the next couple of weeks.

In the Pantry:  Hubby was given several freshly caught bass fish late one evening.

After he cleaned and dressed them, we had enough for a meal the next day and enough to freeze for two meals to have at a later date. They were added to the freezer part of our pantry.

I took all the discarded parts of the fish after hubby finished cleaning them and buried it all in a raised bed to turn into fertilizer!

Fish remains make an excellent fertilizer!

The fish itself was rolled in cornmeal and deep fried.  It was so good!

We were gifted more strawberries this week and I made strawberry freezer jam.

Of course, we ate our fill of them too!

In the Kitchen:  I made two meatloaves, one for us and one to share.

Fitness: I wrote the following quote by journey2better.tera in my fitness journal:  "You absolutely have to work for the things you want!"  My thoughts:  you sure do, especially when it comes to one's fitness!

Sewing: I worked some more on the apron I'm making of the fabric I was gifted a couple of weeks ago. I'm almost finished and hope to have a completed apron to share with you next week.

The 25th day of the month fell this week and as is my goal, I did something towards Christmas preparation.  For this month I chose to do some additional planning and prep in my Christmas journal.  I got several pages ready to start making entries for things like food, gifts, activities, cards and more.

In my Bible study, I started a second Scripture writing endeavor, this time focusing on topics.  You can read more about it HERE along with the topic I chose to start with.

Bargain Hunting:  This week our bargain hunting took us to a local farmstand where I found these 2 eggplant plants on clearance for $.25 each.  You can see in the first picture that they are root bound but otherwise the plant looks healthy.  I 'unbound' the roots, snipped off the bottom leaves and planted them deep.

I had every intention of planting eggplant seeds this week, but when I came across these plants at such a great price, I opted to go this route instead.

I was asked by Annabel over at The Bluebirds are Nesting on the Farm to write a post for her Bluebirds on the Ground series.  You can read what I wrote HERE.

That's it for this week, I hope you've had a good week!

    1. Lee Ann, it is fun to look back every year at what you did plus you have a written record of what you gave who when! Also, I always close out each year with notes to myself about the next Christmas holiday ... what I don't need to buy, what I don't want to try again, what worked and what didn't and so on! My Christmas journal is very helpful!

  2. Patsy, I enjoyed your Bluebird post and appreciate the efficiency you have achieved with your relatively small space. It left me wondering where you find food storage space, if I may ask? Thanks!

    1. Anonymous, thank you! Basically, I declutter with a heavy hand and use that 'found' space for my pantry ... closets, baskets, bowls, under the beds, etc.

  3. My grandfather always planted his tomatoes by putting a catfish head in the hole first then 8 inches of dirt then the tomatoe plant. He always had the best and biggest tomatoes and plants. I love a catfish meal with hush puppies and onion rings. Pasty, now you've made me hungry. LOL

  4. I've got so many birthdays coming up that I simply cannot buy a Christmas gift this month nor next. I hadn't even thought that just planning or perhaps setting aside a canned item toward the holiday meal might be a good preparation for the season. I'll just do that instead! Thank you for the inspiration.

I'll be doing my blog reading this weekend and look forward to reading your post on Annabel's blog.

    1. Terri, I hope you enjoy the post. There are many aspects of Christmas that don't involve gifts that can be done or planned throughout the year.

  5. I bet that fish was delicious! We have had a restful week at the lake house. Sitting outside has been chilly most of the week. We are excited to have two son's families coming in tomorrow for the weekend.

  7. All my little plants come rootbound like that. How exactly is that supposed to be remedied please? We always just squeeze them a little to loosen them.

    1. Hi Laura! The reason is that they stay in the seedling pots too long, these really should have been transferred to a larger pot quite a while ago. The remedy I've always used is fluff out the root ball and trim the longest roots up a bit. Then I plant it deep in the ground and keep it watered good until it gets established.

  8. How do you store your potatoes for long term since it can get quite warm in the south? Do you can all of them?

    1. Anonymous, heat and humidity are big problems for us here so the majority of our potatoes are canned or frozen in some manner, such as french fries or hash browns. I have dehydrated shredded potatoes for hash browns as a way of preserving them.
