~ We had a BLIZZARD in the land of 'no snow!' ~
It was beautiful, it stayed around for about 3 days until and when our day and night time temps rose above freezing. The 'above freezing temps' along with rain cleared it all out. It really was the best kind of snow, it came, stayed 3 days and left! The worst part of it was the bitter cold that accompanied it. We were not unhappy to see the cold go!
Consequently, this has been a week of recovery... recovery that looked like doing the necessities and letting the rest go.
I did have some onions that needed using or preserving, I chose to chop and freeze them in one cup increments. I put these onion filled snack bags in a larger freezer bag. When I want to use some, I can pull out one baggie at a time or as much as I need.
I also had some horseradish root that I needed to preserve, so I chopped and dehydrated it.
I finished reading Spring Will Come, by Ginny Dye, book 3 in the Bregdan Chronicles. I enjoyed it just as much as the first two in the series, but this one held an extra treasure for me ... it shared how the main character used herbs to help other characters in the story line recover from illnesses. Yes, I know it's fiction, but I will take what the author included about the herbs and do my own research. I already know that some of the ways the main character used the herbs are accurate from my previous research and current use and am looking forward to researching the other herbs mentioned. There are so many ways to learn if we're really interested in a subject!

I am envious of your snow and glad you were able to get through it. I keep wondering if you still have chickens? Also, I hope you are able to get back to your patriotic quilt. It sounds wonderful ! I have to keep telling myself this is not the year for such a project for me. 🤭 Hope you have a slower, more evenly paced week!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, yes, we still have chickens and they made it through the Blizzard and frigid temperatures just fine. I have every intention of getting back to my patriotic quilt, I'm behind, but still working on it.
DeleteThat sure was an unusual snow storm! How blessed we all were to keep our power on. Last time I froze onions everything in that freezer tasted like onions. Maybe if I freeze in jars it will work.
ReplyDeleteWe have hardly left the house with all the icy roads in fact when I wrote the cash check for February Hubby realized we hadn't even cashed the one for January. Only one grocery trip in the last three weeks too so I have almost two months of grocery money left. We really don't need anything because we are really trying to eat down the over supply we have here
Lana, to keep onions from making everything else take on their odors, you are suppose to leave them on the counter for 30 minutes to 1 hour before freezing (after chopping). I do this and nothing ever takes on the smell of onions. Hope this helps.
DeleteLana, we too, have a lot to be thankful for during and immediately after the Blizzard and like you, not losing power is one of them.
DeleteI haven't noticed our onions smelling up anything in the freezer. Cindy Jane has a good suggestion in her comment.
Yeah for having extra grocery money. We too, are eating down our pantry in preparation for the upcoming harvest season. I'm being very mindful to stay within the boundaries of the size of pantry we have right now. It seems to be a good fit for our size family Enough to get us through the year, but not enough to have items get old sitting in the pantry waiting for use.
Thank you for sharing the link to Steph. I've added it to my reading list.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy to think you received that much snow. Years ago I lived in Fayetteville, NC and just snow flurries sent every one into a panic! I'm in Central Indiana and we also received about a foot of snow the week before you all. It's been so cold that we have about 6 inches still on the ground. Not unusual, but boy are we ready for a warm up!
Wendi, our area reacts to a snow flurry similar to the one you mentioned ... a predicted flurry sends everyone to the grocery store ... can you imagine what the stores looked like with people preparing for 12 inches!
DeleteLana, I put the bags of onions in another ziplock or container to keep the smell from overpowering everything. Sue in Minnesota
ReplyDeleteSue, that's what I do, I double bag them.
DeleteThank you for the link. I will pop over there and take a look.
ReplyDeleteCoping with cold weather does take a lot of energy. It really does slow you down. We are all recovering from heavy colds and at the moment and it is a case of doing a chore and then sitting and having a cup of tea before tackling something else.
Tracy, that was our plan of action during the Blizzard and afterwards! It worked beautifully!
DeletePatsy, Thank you for another wonderful blog post. Thanks for the link to Stephanie's new blog!
ReplyDeleteLaurieS, you are most welcome! Thank you for your encouragement!
DeleteOh goodness! We were missed by the last two winter storms. But bitter cold! I bought a winter coat a couple of years ago, a nice heavy coat, and in two years I wore it less than I've worn it in January and February of this year!
ReplyDeleteWe finally got robins here and they looked so terribly skinny and worn out. I think they had a hard winter before they got here.
We are eating mostly from the pantry and freezer. I used the grocery money saved to pay on the credit card debt we accumulated in October and November doing major maintenance on our two twenty-year-old vehicles. I paid off one of the two we used! I was pretty pleased about making that much headway. The cold weather has also meant we've been home a lot.
We went out to eat on Friday as a birthday celebration and we ate THREE times off the two meals we bought. I had a free dessert coupon and that dessert stretched to treating us three times as well. We paid for the meal with a gift card given to us at Christmas time.
We picked up car tags too...But we keep a sinking fund for that annual expense.
Terri, your comment is so inspiring! That's how we get things done, isn't it? We make a plan and work that plan.
DeleteHappy Birthday to whose ever birthday it was! You all really stretched out the birthday day meal ... way to go!
We got maybe 3 inches at the most in Raleigh 😬
ReplyDeleteLee Ann, you all were smack dab in the middle of the dry slot. We thought we were going to miss it completely when we went to bed that night, but boy did things change overnight and the next morning we woke up to 12 inches!
DeleteOh wow Patsy, so much snow! I’m so glad that you survived the storm relatively unscathed. No doubt due to your preparedness and how important that it continues to be on our agenda. I also love how you’ve cup up your onions to freeze in one cup bags. That’s a time saver for sure! I’ll be sure to remember this when I have any excess onions to use up.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for giving me a shout out! I really appreciate your support and hope you have a restful week! xox
Stephanie, it was a lot of snow, especially for an area that rarely gets even a flurry! Things are back to normal around here, now I'm in catch up mode!
