The Vicky Challenge: May 10th, 2016

Here’s my latest Vicky Challenge entry …

I/we saved/earned $638.95 this week in The Vicky Challenge!  Here’s how it breaks down:

Made 3 quarts kefir milk:  Saved $2.04 per quart … total savings:  $6.12

Chickens laid 3 dozen eggs this week:  Saved $9

Saved $32 by taking advantage of sales, coupons and clearance items.

Used neither heat nor air conditioner 2 days this past week: Saved $26

Yard work/gardening/landscaping (does not include mowing) (4 hours x $10 per hour for labor):  Saved $40

Earned $25 for baking a carrot cake for a lady in the community.

Planted 12 tomato plants and 2 pepper plants that I grew from seeds: Saved ($1.00/plant) … $14

Harvested and dried the following herbs: plantain, nettles and lemon balm. Saved (nettles - $3.86) (plantain - $6) (lemon balm – 5.50) … $15.36

When we went to purchase chicken feed this week they had a deal going on where when you purchased 100 lbs of chicken feed you got 6 baby chicks for free.  We usually buy our chicken feed in 100 lb increments so guess who came home with 6 free baby chicks???  Saved ($1.50 per chick): $9

I have chronic back issues and from time to time it really flares up and gets inflamed.  I had a flare up over the weekend and instead of going to the doctor, I pulled out my castor oil pack and used it.  (I first learned of using a castor oil pack for inflammation in the book Be Your Own Doctor by Rachel Weaver.)    This method always helps me with the inflammation to the point that after a couple of days of use, I’m back up and going again.  Saved: co-pay to doctor plus cost of steroid shot and meds … $75

The USDA’s ‘moderate’ Food Budget for a family the size of ours is $589.70.  In April we spent $205.23, (our regular grocery budget is $25/week + any extra money we can earn or save from other areas of the budget.) that’s a savings of $384.47.

I continue to work on earning Swagbucks that will be redeemed for a Walmart gift card, am doing Pinecone surveys whenever I can and am working on earning points through Bing which I’ll redeem for Amazon gift cards. At the end of the month I'll take what I've earned and do some 'free' shopping!

Thus far this year my Vicky Challenge savings/earnings have been $5,330.54, add this week’s amount ($638.95) and I/we have saved $5969.49.  I'm really enjoying seeing how much I/we save/earn from home!
