My Husband Built Me a Salad Barrel!!!

I've wanted a salad barrel for quite some time, but finding the food grade barrels was not an easy task.  A few weeks ago we found them and my husband set about gathering the rest of the materials he would need.  Today he built the first one (Oh yes, we need more than one of these!!!)

Here's a pictorial of how he built it …

He started with a food grade 55 gallon plastic barrel ...

he cut it in half and washed it out … it had had sunflower oil in it …

he cut the braces next ...

then cut and notched out the legs …

putting together the stand that would hold the half barrel was next …

he drilled holes in the top sides of the barrel and attached the barrel to the frame by screwing the barrel sides to the frames...

next we flipped it over and he attached the braces ..

including a third brace …

back up on it's legs it goes …

The last thing he did was to drill drain holes in the barrel.
One down and several more to go!!!

Didn't my hubby do good!!!

  1. Patsy, what is a salad barrel for? Not sure I have heard of one before.

    1. You grow different varieties of lettuce, spinach, spring onions, etc in it. The 'greens' part of a salad, Nanna Chel. If you Google it you will find all kinds of uses and things to grow in them.

  2. Patsy that is brilliant and gets the planter off the ground so you don't have to bend :).

We did something similar but not as a planter and cut a blue barrel in half and used one to put on top of our garden trolley to catch grey water from our washing machine and we also put grey water from our showers in there and wheel it around to water the house paddock lawns with.

    1. Sewingcreations15, getting it off the ground so I didn't have to bend was very important!!! That's a good idea for using one to water with as well.

  5. Oh, that is so neat!!! The not-bending part of it is the best (bending is also difficult for me). I'm going to show this to my husband as a hint! ;)

  7. That is so clever! I grow my lettuce and herbs in roof gutters attached to a pallet. Does well with no bending.

  8. That is really cool. That would make it great so you don't have to bend over.
