30 Day Preserving Challenge: Day 30 ... Apples

Here we are at day 30 of my 30 Day Preserving Challenge Series and it's all about apples!

We brought back 2 varieties of apples from our travels, Crispin (pictured) and  I don't know what the other variety is!

It's good that apples hold well because I've been working on preserving these for a few days already!

I've dehydrated apple slices …  I'll chop these up and use them in granola or to just snack on; I love dehydrated apple slices for snacking.

… and canned several jars of chunky applesauce!

I plan to can up some apple pie filling, continue dehydrating apple slices and make more chunky applesauce with the rest of them.

How do you preserve apples?

I hope you've enjoyed this 30 Day Preserving Challenge.  I've striven to share something different in each entry even though on some days I preserved some of the same things as in other entries.  I still have several things to preserve that I'll be sharing from time to time but for all practical purposes, my 30 Day Preserving Challenge ends with this post.

  1. Yum! I freeze my apple pie filling and do some chunky applesauce. I need to call our favorite apple stand in the NC mountains and ask when our favorites will be available. We love Jonagolds and they are only available for a short time each fall. I will fill up a drawer on our spare fridge for fresh eating as well as putting some by for later.

    1. Lana, where in the mountains of NC do you get your apples? I am looking for some suitable for canning that will hold together through the canning process but need to do a bit of research on the best variety. I like Jonagolds too!!

    2. We go to McAbee's in Flat Rock. It is next to the Dish Barn on I-26. I find Jonagolds to be good for everything but I have not canned slices so I can't answer that question.

  2. Your post on preserving apples is very timely. We went apple picking and have a LOT of apples to preserve. We picked 4 varieties including Grimes, Liberty (my personal favorite), Candy crisp, and some type of red variety. I made 9 pints of applesauce and did it turn out yummy! I will be attempting to dehydrate some apples for the first time. Wish me luck. We will still have plenty of apples to snack on, plus another opportunity to pick later variety apples in a week or two. Love your posts.

    1. Marley, thank you for your encouragement! To me the best applesauce is when a variety of apples are used. I even threw in a few Asian pears this year and the final taste is delicious!

  3. Patsy, your canned apples look lovely. I can applesauce each fall and usually freeze a few pie fillings as well. Have you ever added cranberries to your applesauce or pie filling? It's nice for a bit of a change. We live in SC and drive up to Hendersonville, NC several times each fall for produce. We can get canning apples for $12 a bushel at our favorite farm.

    1. becka, Hendersonville is about 4 1/2 - 5 hours from us, a little too far to drive for apples, but that sure is a good price! I have not even thought about adding cranberries to the applesauce or pie filling but that is a good idea … I'll have to see if I have any cranberries stashed away in the freezer.

    2. Becka, you must live near me. Can you share where you go? We go to McAbee's in Flat Rock. Sometimes they have culls for $4 a bushel.

    3. My I also add the idea of adding any type of berries or fruit to the apples as you boil them down to make applesauce. I can up strawberry applesauce for my daughter, as that is her favourite. However, you could add raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, etc. Just another way to add variety to your pantry preserves!

  5. I have some apples from the neighbour that I need to preserve tomorrow. I make apple pie filling and freeze it, just like another of your commenters.

    God bless.
