An early morning walk-through and harvest of the garden gave me plenty to work on today! I knew there would be several things to harvest, I've been keeping an eye on the garden over the last week while we were involved in a 4-day service project with our church.
This morning I prioritized what needed preserving first and set about gathering the following:tomatoes
basil
rosemary
bell peppers (I'll use these to make stuffed peppers for our main meal of the day)
jalapeño peppers
purple hull peas (enough for a side dish for our main meal of the day.)
There is more produce ready for preserving but this is enough for today. I'll pace myself and work on adding these items to my pantry. (I'm still dealing with an injured right wrist and hand from my fall, so it's going to be slow going. I had the second ortho appointment yesterday and I'm being sent for a CT scan. The options for what's going on are (1) severely aggravated arthritis or (2) fractured scaphoid in my hand/wrist. The doctor wanted to give me a cortisone shot in my hand to calm the arthritis down, I refused it until we know for sure what we're dealing with. If it turns out to be arthritis, I will explore other options before I go the cortisone shot route. There are no guarantees that this will work, it doesn't work on everyone, my hubby is one of them. He had a cortisone shot in his hand a few years ago, it hurt like crazy for 2 days afterwards and gave him 1 week of relief for the original pain that the shot was administered for ... hmmm! If it is a fracture, I will be in a cast for several weeks. I sure would appreciate prayers for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.)
After coming inside with my harvest, I closed up the house to help keep it cool as I'll be running 2 canners most of the day and then brewed myself a pot of raspberry tea to sip on as I work. I'll set up my phone to listen to podcasts and Youtube channels as I work on my continuing education while working to fill my pantry.
It will be a full workday, but one that has me already feeling so satisfied! Yes, I love the lifestyle we live!
Check back tonight for an update on what I actually got done and what I listened to while I worked!
P.M. update: I didn't get all the tomatoes canned but did do 14 quarts of juice and (separately) 7 quarts of Boston Butt meat. I still have more tomatoes to do tomorrow, but I'm done for today!

Having broken my right wrist (radius) in a fall 17 mos. ago requiring surgery and aggravating my thumb arthritis greatly, I am praying that you get an accurate Dx and the correct treatment. My Dr suggested turmeric w/black pepper taken daily, and I do notice some improvement in the pain. Ask you Dr about other options besides cortisone shots. Look into adaptive kitchen tools and other items if you need to.

Frances, once my doctor accepted that I didn't want the cortisone shot we did talk about some other alternatives and turmeric was one of them. I already take turmeric twice a day and she did mention another over the counter product that I will be checking out as well. Thank you for your prayers. I hope you are doing much better with your wrist.
DeleteHoping for the best for your wrist. I had a lot of pain at the scaphoid, but my fracture was on the other side, at the triqueteral. The muscles were compensating, which is why I had pain on the opposite side. If you do have to have it casted and have an option, I'd recommend the molded cast with a sock and velcro. Makes it much easier for bathing. I need to get some raspberries preserved. Pickles are starting up and tomatoes will be coming in soon. It's going to be a busy time in the coming weeks! Stay cool and hydrated!
ReplyDeleteLori, I'll keep that in mind about the cast, thank you. It is indeed a busy time, and I am so thankful so have the produce to preserve!
DeleteFirst you have to fortify your self with a big old tomato sandwich! What a wonderful bounty!
ReplyDeletePraying for your hand and you made a wise choice on that shot.
What we have on hand is oils and herbs to treat so many ills and aches and pains this week. I am so thankful for having spent years stocking my oils and now the laying in of herbal formulas to keep us well.
On another subject-today was the first day we went grocery shopping that I can really feel that things are going to get worse. Many items had doubled in price since we shopped two weeks ago at Aldi. The store was weirdly not busy which makes me wonder if people are just not able to afford food so they are not shopping. Those few cents that gas has come down can not cover for these prices. For those who buy your flour at Sam's Club, our store has not had bread flour for at least 6 months so we tried the high gluten flour in the 50 pound bag and it makes better bread than the bread flour. We were a bit leery of aa 50 pound purchase and not knowing how it would bake up but it is great. A five pound bag of bread flour is $4.68 here at the regular grocery store. The 50 pound bag is $22.34.
Lana, tomato sandwiches are just the best aren't they especially when the tomato is home grown!
DeleteWe haven't been grocery shopping in several weeks but are hearing that prices have greatly increased. That's good to know about the high gluten flour at Sam's Club. We can get bread flour at our Sam's Club but haven't been able to get self-rising flour in over a year.
We will venture out to do some grocery shopping in the next week or so and am preparing myself to see the increases.
I am trying to learn all I can about herbs and essential oils to keep us well too. Now, if only there was an herb or essential oil that would prevent falls!!!
I have been stocking Christopher's Formulas. His herbal blends are just amazing. Our middle son gave me some little notebooks with yellow covers and yellow dot grids on the paper. I could not see those dots at all. I took his eye formula just once and the dots showed up!
DeleteLana, I have a few Christopher's Formulas but will focus on adding more. Thank you for the info.
DeleteWe continue to pray for your hand. Declining to have the shot is a very wise move. The weather here in PA had been extremely hot and humid with no letup in sight for this week. Yesterday we harvested chard, basil, cilantro, the last of the beets, green beans and peppers. Like you, today was spent preserving. The basil was made into pesto, the beets were roasted and the green beans were packaged into food saver bags. All things were added to the freezer. Squash borers killed all the zucchini plants. However a friend who had an abundance called and asked if I needed a my zucchini. Of course the answer was yes. I was gifted with a 5 gallon bucket of them. This was an answer to prayer. With the zucchini I added zucchini fritters and 4 quarts of cream of zucchini soup to the freezer and there is still more to preserve tomorrow. Chard will be done tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteCookie, thank you for your continued prayers. Today was extremely hot and humid too and like in your area, there is no letup in sight. We have started getting a bit of rain and we're so thankful for that. I hope it doesn't dry up again! Yeah for the zucchini, I'm hoping we'll have some in a week or so.
DeletePraying I am so sorry about your hand.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHello Patsy,
ReplyDeleteHave you considered using a camp stove in a garage, breezeway or covered porch to do your canning? I use a Camp Chef two burner (see it at https://www.amazon.com/Camp-Chef-EX60LW-Explorer-Outdoor/dp/B0006VORDY) in my garage. Keeps the heat and steam out of the house so the air conditioner doesn't have to run as much. You probably can find one locally at a sporting goods store.
Sherpherdess55, yes, we have considered this but our temps and humidity are too high during the summer. It gets better in September and October though so that is an option then.
