From My Home to Yours
~ Where do I even begin? ~
We've been without internet service all week. A storm blew through last Friday evening and wiped out the internet in our area. It was finally restored yesterday afternoon.
You all know me and know that I'm all about having backup plans in place for everything I can including an internet outage. I must admit that I found some areas in my internet preparedness that need tweaking, and you can bet, I'll be working on those asap.
Do you have an internet preparedness backup plan? Before you poo poo it off, let me ask you if you pay any bills online? Do you work from home or have a job online? Does working from home require internet access? Do you communicate with medical professionals online? Do you access your bank account online? You see, having internet access is not just about scrolling and hanging out online. It has become an important part of how we function in our everyday lives. This was brought home to me in a sudden and unexpected way this last week and like I said, I've got some tweaking to do!
So, what did my week look like ... let's take a peek ...
I continued working on restocking my pantry for winter; I believe we are ready for day 18 in my #everylittlebitcountschallenge.
Day 18 ... I jarred up the cayenne pepper that's been drying for several weeks. I also jarred up moringa that I also had drying in my house.
Also on day 18, I strained and jarred the different herbal oils I've had in the works for several weeks. Before too much longer I'll be making salves, etc with these oils. Until then, I'm storing them in the refrigerator to help them hang onto their potency as long as possible.
fresh picked and washed peanuts ready for boiling
On Day 19, hubby was given permission to dig fresh peanuts from a friend's field, which he did. He spent a day, digging and picking the peanuts off the vines. Another day was spent boiling them and after he had shared some and ate his fill, he packaged and froze some for the freezer. He loves boiled peanuts, me ... not so much!
I've really been focusing on fall cleaning and reorganizing this week as well. The hurricane that we were watching and preparing for last week did not make landfall but did leave us with a couple of days of solid rain. That's okay, we really needed the rain. My little fall garden has greened up and is growing by leaps and bounds.
I also posted the third lesson in our ladies Bible study on Abigail over on From This Heart of Mine.
That's all for this week!
I hope you've found something in my ramblings that will help and or encourage you in the upcoming week.

Remember hurricane Isabella. So most folks lost power (kind of expected) except cell tower folks forgot to have/start the backup power. So no cell phones in our area for several days.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I well remember Hurricane Isabella, and Hurricane Florence, and Hurricane Matthew! They all left us powerless for several days! Our cell phone usage was hit and miss with the only way to communicate with any reliability was texting. We could get a text out when we couldn't call out.
DeleteI had never heard of moringa. It sounds a useful thing to have around. I also never knew that you can boil peanuts. I am always learning things from your blog.
ReplyDeleteI made a small batch of green tomato chutney this week and also mixed up a jar of my home-made pizza seasoning. I cut back a lot of growth on my outdoor tomato plants to help ripen the tomatoes left on them. I am just hoping that we get more sun than rain or they will be splitting. Yesterday it did nothing but rain.
Tracy, the weather seems to run in extremes in our area and that makes it hard to grow things. It sounds like you've been busy ... tomato chutney and pizza seasoning! You go girl!
DeleteWhat’s bad for us when we lose internet we also lose tv.
ReplyDeleteLee Ann, since we don't have cable or satellite or any kind of streaming service our plain ole antenna TV worked just fine. That was one thing we didn't have to do without!
DeleteYou stay very busy . Love boiled peanuts.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I intentionally stay busy! I often tell others when similar comments are made to me that I move today so I can move tomorrow!
DeleteI have a digital antenna for my TV that is backup if we lose internet. That thing picks up lots of channels. I also have hotspot capability on my phone so I can turn that on an connect my laptop or whatever and it uses my phone data. I have unlimited now so it's not a problem. I have a question about storing potatoes - how do you make them last without growing eyes and getting soft and spoiling? Putting them in the fridge makes them have a sweet taste so I don't like to store them there, but everywhere else seems to be too hot in my area.
ReplyDeleteKathy, we live in a hot and humid climate, and this is the only way we can store potatoes for any length of time with success ... we store them in an old plastic milk crate in the coolest, darkest area inside our home. We don't wash them at all, just cull out the ones that have any kind of cuts, bruises, etc on them. I keep a watch on them making sure to use the ones that are starting to look questionable first. We can usually get 3 - 4 months out of them using them method.
