From My Home to Yours
~ Blueberries, Peaches, Sunflowers and Extremely Hot Weather! ~
We've had heat advisories and warnings for a good part of the week because of temperatures nearing 100 degrees and over each day. (The 'feel like' temperatures put it at or around 105 - 110 degrees.) So, we made it our aim to have all our outdoor chores done by 8 a.m. every day. It made for having to get up earlier than we normally would, but it has been worth it to be able to escape the heat and humidity. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices don't we, and for us this week it was giving up a bit of sleep in order to make it possible to escape the heat and humidity!
Look at this beautiful scene that I get to enjoy every day right now just by looking out our door! Can I just say, that we are so very blessed!
I made 'ginger concentrate' this week. I took fresh ginger, peeled it and cut it into small chunks. Next, I added a few chunks to my Nutri-bullet along with about a cup of water and whizzed it all together. I strained out the ginger pulp and added the ginger concentrate to a jar. I continued this process until I had worked my way through all the fresh ginger. Pictured is what I got. My next step is to pour it into ice cube trays, freeze it, pop the frozen cubes out, bag them up and put them back in the freezer. When I get ready to use, I'll pull out one cube, add it to a glass of water, tea or other beverage and enjoy! Ginger has many health benefits and to me, taste good too!
We spent less than $20 at the grocery store this week, we just didn't need anything ... oh my, it's so good to be in the driver's seat when it comes to grocery shopping. Having and maintaining a well-stocked pantry has put us in the driver's seat, and with food prices the way they are now, I can't think of a better place to be!
Here's a heads up ... our local big box store is putting out the 'back-to-school' supplies. This is the time that I purchase enough paper, pens, markers, etc to last until back-to-school shopping comes around again next year. I will be inventorying what I have on hand, looking at my needs for the upcoming year along with gift giving needs, making a list and doing the shopping.
Here's something I've been contemplating ... I'd like your input ...
This summer, I'm thinking about taking up that challenge, what can I add to my pantry that we will eat and or use that will build it up and or restock it. Here would be my guidelines ...
Total must be $5 or less each week not including taxes.
Must be a separate purchase ... in other words it cannot be hand-picked items from a weekly grocery haul that totals $5 or less.
All items must come from a grocery store, farmers market, etc. In other words they must be purchased. No running out to the garden and putting a grocery store price on items harvested or shared with us. This challenge is meant to stretch us in utilizing a small amount of money to help build up or restock our pantry.
Must be items we regularly use. This will keep us from seeing a good deal on something 'we might like' and spending our 'challenge money' only to never get around to trying it or finding out we don't like it at all. This challenge is for our tried and true pantry building basics.
This challenge includes all things in our pantry: food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.
One more guideline ... no rolling money over from week to week. We have to spend it or lose it!
What do you think? Would this be helpful?
Please let me know your thoughts in the comments. If there is little to no interest, we'll move on and forget it.
One more thing ... it's July and that means it's time to start thinking about and planning for Christmas. Consider this your wake-up call! It's time to start seriously planning for the Christmas holidays! That's all I'm going to say about that right now!
Psst! I'm watching a Christmas show as I work on this post. I'm a great fan of all things Christmas, including Christmas in July events!
I continued reading book 7 in the Bregdan Chronicles, Glimmers of Change, by Ginny Dye. I have much more listening time than reading time right now. I can listen to audio books while I work, but alas, I haven't found a way to read from a book while working. I finished listening to Tomorrow's First Light by Naomi Rawlings. (All the audio books I listen to come from Libby the library app.)
Until the next time ...

I really wanted peaches the last few weeks. The regular price has been $2.99 lb. Last week they were on sale for $1.49, I bought 6 and it was still a little over $6.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, fresh fruit is expensive that's why when we were offered peaches at this price we took it even though the timing was not the best.
DeleteI finally downloaded a new RSS Feed Reader, so will see how long this one lasts before shutting down. Your peaches look wonderful. Our area had a late spring hard freeze which has left trees with not even 1/4 of their usual harvest. Prices for them are outrageous right now, but I'm trying to support our local farmers when I can. I always find the pantry challenge fun, challenging, and educational. But I'm not certain how much I could contribute. I'm a single-person household and am pretty much only purchasing essentials right now, focusing on how to use up what I have in terms of refrigerator, freezer, and what needs to be used up from my pantry rotation.
ReplyDeleteLori, it is so wise to do what you are doing on 'focusing on how to use up what you have in terms of refrigerator, freezer, and what needs to be used up from your pantry rotation.' We all need to be doing that, regardless of whether we watching every penny for whatever reason or not.
DeleteI would love to do the $5.00 challenge. I need the inspiration of a challenge.
ReplyDeleteDonna, a challenge such as this does serve to make us more aware and intentional, doesn't it!
DeleteI would love to try the pantry challenge. I hope to get some peaches to can in the next couple weeks. Blueberries have been too high priced for me. This is due to drought here in the mountains I’m told. Thanks for your weekly inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, the drought has been bad here too, but thankfully we got a good deal on the blueberries we purchased. Hubby knew someone who knew someone and was able to get a better price. Thank you for your encouragement!
DeleteI’d love the $5 challenge
ReplyDeleteLee Ann, thank you!
DeleteI would love the see the $5 challenge again, it challenged me and it was encouraging to read what others were able to purchase with their $5.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, thank you!
DeletePatsi, I think it is a great idea to do the $5 challenge, it will get others to look and add to their pantries. Even one extra item helps. I was surprise last week when I was able to add 5 boxes of tissues for $5.20 so a little over $5, though still a good price.
DeleteWe had peaches on sale for $0.99 lb last week, they limited you, though I was able to get 11 pounds and turn them into 3 batches of jam and 3 bottles of syrup. When I calculated how much I saved doing this, I was happy and so was my pantry.
Rosanne, that was quite a bargain on the tissues and peaches! You go girl!
DeleteYes to the $5 challenge
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, thank you for responding!
DeleteI'm in on the $5 challenge. Even though with the passing of my husband that I'm a single person household I still got blueberries in bulk from Kiwanis, which is something we did yearly when they had their sale. I just didn't get as many pounds as we usually got. Glad you're enjoying "The Bregdan Chronicles. I'm currently reading the 22nd volume "Lifted by the Wings of Destiny "January-June 1874. I get Ginnie Dye's newsletter and she has announced that she will be releasing two more volumes in the coming year.. That was great news to me that the story will continue. We had a freeze here also and we won't be getting any local peaches this year.. Blessings, Cookie
ReplyDeleteCookie, it is so good to see you commenting ... you continue to be in my prayers. I am delighted to hear that The Bregdan Chronicles is going to continue. I need to find out where to sign up for Ginny Dye's newsletter, I really like her style of writing. You are wise to continue to maintain your pantry in spite of your great loss. You still need to take care of yourself and having a well-stocked pantry is just one way you can do that.
DeleteThe field of sunflowers is some sight! I think it is impossible not to smile when you see sunflowers growing like that.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has been watching the Christmas channel lately. Perhaps it has been because the weather has (for the UK) been so hot. Even the thought of snow seems to lower the temperature a bit.
Tracy, it's been and is so very hot here too and Christmas in July events just seems to mentally help with the heat outside ... or it does me!
DeleteI like the $5 challenge. It forces a person to think when shopping and shows good deals are still out there for those who search.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is when you share how you use your garden harvests in different ways. Sometimes I am blessed with an abundance and don't know what to do. As an example, last year onions were prolific so I dehydrated the green tops, ground them into a powder, and seasoned everything. Since the flavor is milder than regular onions, it required much more which is adding an extra green to meals. My son began using them and loved experimenting too. This year he recommended doing red onions and shallots for a taste test - there is a difference in flavor!
Jeannie@GetMeToTheCountry
Jeannie, thank you and yes, the rule around here is to waste as little as possible whether it comes from the garden or purchased elsewhere. Hmmm ... red onions and shallots ... I'll have to make a note to try that next year!
DeleteThe $5 pantry challenge sounds fun.
ReplyDeleteLana, thank you for responding!
DeleteI would appreciate to see the ideas and suggestions of the $5 challenge. Thank you, Patsy, for all you do to help and encourage so many!! God's continued blessings to you.
