In Her Little Black Purse: Crocheting

It was a Wednesday night and we were at church.  Everyone was visiting waiting for time to start Bible classes when in comes a little 5 year old girl carrying a little black purse and sits down beside me.  She said, "Mrs. Patsi, you want to see what I have in my purse?"  I said, "Of course!"   (This little girl is one of the twins that you've heard me speak of often.)

She opened her purse and pulled out a small skein of yarn and a crochet hook.  I had told this same little girl a while back, when she saw me crocheting and expressed interest in wanting to know how to do that, that I would show her how sometime.  Evidently, she had not forgotten and in her little mind, now was the time.

So, I sat her down beside me right there on that church pew and started showing her how to make a chain stitch, but there was a problem.  The crochet hook that she had brought was way too small for the yarn she had brought causing it to make a mess of the yarn.  Her mama said she had a larger one at home and that she would bring it next time so, we postponed our crocheting lesson.

I don't know if she will be interested enough to want to continue or if I can teach this little girl to crochet, but I am sure going to be caught trying if she wants to learn.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if I could pass on this 'old art' to the next generation?

Update: 3/21/2017 ... the little girl brought her yarn and bigger hook back to evening church last night and we had our official first lesson before church started.  She actually did quite well!  Another little girl saw what we were doing and wants to learn too.  I told her mama if she would provide the yarn and hook I would show her how as well, for as long as she/they were interested.  I may have started something!!!
