Greenhouse Repair and Expansion: Part 3

Here we are reporting on day 3 of our greenhouse repair and expansion and to look at the picture you would wonder if we got anything done...

The answer to that would be 'yes, we did, but it was foundational type stuff.  The kind of stuff that doesn't look like much progress is being made, but very important structurally.

My husband spent most of the day securing and replacing the wire ties that fasten the ribs and cross pieces together.  Doing this makes for a really strong and sturdy structure and is quite necessary if the structure is going to withstand long-term use.  For each wire tire my husband also applied a special foam pad to protect the greenhouse film when it's added.  There are 91 wire tires in all and hubby did almost all of them today plus the pads. He still has a few more to go and then we'll start the expansion.

While hubby was working on this, I repotted the two bay leaf trees I purchased earlier into bigger pots … they came in really small containers!

After that I 'caged' our blueberry bushes, a couple of them will need to be netted before long so I needed to get things in place for that to happen.  Then I got my wheel barrow, opened up a bag of black kow and dumped it in, wheeled my wheelbarrow over to the compost bins, shoveled in several shovels of compost and mixed it all up really well.  I added some of this mixture at the base of my rose bushes, blueberries, some of my herbs, my rhubarb and then I did all our fruit trees ...

This peach tree is full of blooms as are our plum trees.  I wanted to give them a little boost to get them going and support their blooming and putting on fruit. You can see the black kow/compost mixture at the base of the tree.

Hubby's job was very time consuming so I had time to get one more job done …

I planted pecan trees in two different places.  This is one of them … yes, I realize you can't see it, but it is there, I promise!  I put a cage around both trees so that we wouldn't forget that they are there and to remind me to give them extra TLC this year.

By 1 p.m. we finished up and headed inside.  I cooked our main meal of the day and canned 7 quarts of turkey.  We ate, got ourselves ready to attend mid-week Bible class and headed out the door.

It's been a full day, but a very satisfying one!  I hope you've had a good day too!

There's more to come on the greenhouse and on our spring planting!

  1. Patsy it is all coming along really well the greenhouse and you have done lots of planting and fertilising as well. Good on you.

The ribs of the greenhouse are they PVC piping wired together and anchored at the bottom ? as with most greenhouses.

Fertilising must have been the flavour of the month as we also dug trenches around our mulberry and mardarin ? tree in the paddock garden orchard. We then fertilised them with a mixture of well rotted cow manure and horse manure and raked up all the leaves from around the other trees in the yard to put around the base of them for some mulch. They have been getting watered by our grey water pumped from our grey water tank.

We are destructing rather than constructing in the gardens at the moment as we had two large wire enclosed vegetable gardens in the back yard. Unfortunately most of the large wooden support beams have been eaten out with termites of which there are many around here unfortunately. We are in the process of pulling them both down and saving the wiring to build garden beds closer to the house. As ready made metal ones are cheaper to buy rather than make we will buy some of those and use the good posts and the metal piping we had to put up a framework for a shadecloth area over the vegetable beds. The chicken wire and remaining piping we will use for a fence around the vegetable gardens to keep out the kangaroos.

All a work in progress and no doubt it will take us some time to accomplish all of this and save up for a few things.

Have a great week in the garden everyone :).

    1. Lorna, you are busy for sure!!! Yes, the piping wired together and anchored at the bottom is 3/4 inch PVC. I'll try to remember to get a shot of how we anchor them when we start the expansion part.

  2. Do you use wiggle wire to secure your plastic?

    1. Out My Window, no, we do not. I'll show how we secure it when we get to that part. We do not use any kind of wire to secure the greenhouse film.

    1. Lana, it seems that as soon as we can one thing done on the to-do list, two more things take it's place!!!
