Pantry Remake: Part 3

My remodeled 'official pantry' is finished and I am so very pleased with the way it turned out!

I have received several questions on specifics of how it was done so I'm going to try to answer those questions now:  (I am not a carpenter so if something is unclear, ask again and I'll try to get a better explanation from my husband.)

How big is the closet?  4 feet wide x 4 1/2 feet deep

How deep are the shelves?  the shelves in the back, which are the deepest, are 12 inches; the ones on either side are approximately 6 1/2 inches deep.  My husband made the shelf depth to correspond to the room he had to work with, if he had more room before the doorway opened up he would have made the shelves wider on both sides.

What is the height of the shelves?  We used a quart jar to measure how much space we wanted between the shelves.  We added a couple of inches to the height of a quart jar and that was the distance we put between each shelf.  The bottom shelf is high enough to hold gallon jars.  The floor space under the bottom shelf is also the height of a gallon jar.  The top shelf has approximately a foot and a half of space to store things.

How are the shelves secured?

Do you see all those strips on either side?  Those are the foundation of the support for the shelves.  My husband took the shelves pictured above and cut them down to 12 inches and used them for the back shelves.  The pieces that were cut off were used to make the side shelves ...

… and were anchored down like this.  This is the underside of one of the shelves, do you see how the back of the shelf rests on the strips that were already in place on the walls?  My husband added the strip on the left and attached each shelf to it, giving it stability.

He did the same thing where the narrow shelves joined the wider shelves.  After installing the strips, my husband and I both, pulled, pushed and tried to see if they would hold up under the weight that they would be carrying.  There was no give and everything stayed in place.

I am so proud of this makeover.  Tomorrow, I'll give you a peak of it all filled and ready for use!

  2. Wow Patsy your pantry makeover looks wonderful and you will be able to store so many more things in there now.

How wonderful you have a husband who is handy like mine as it saves so much on getting a tradesperson in to do it for you. He also made very good use of the timber you both purchased by using the offcuts for the side shelves.

    Have a great week :).
