~ from my home to yours ... ~
I love our little home, it's perfect for us! There's warmth and love within its walls and yes, mason jars, home preserved foods, herbs, books, WIP projects, lots of snuggly quilts, a swing on the front porch and a rocking chair nearby! We call it home and we call ourselves blessed. We give God the glory for He has had and continues to have His hand in it all!

What's That In Your Hand: 2/11/22

What's in your hand and what can you do with it?

Welcome to this week's “What’s That in Your Hand?’ edition where we strive to inspire you to focus on what you have to work with, not what you wish you had or hope to have in the future, but what you have right now ...

From time to time my husband’s job requires him to eat out or grab a sandwich on the go while out.  When he is given more condiment packages than he will use he brings them home and this is what I do with them … yep, I store them in jars and use them as needed!  (Ketchup, soy sauce, jelly, mustard, mayonnaise, etc)  What’s that in your hand?

I had some ham bones that I was saving in the freezer, which were taking up quite a bit of room, so I got them out, put them in a pot, covered them with water, brought them to a boil, turned them down and let them simmer for a few hours.  The rest of the meat cooked off the bones and our dog got a treat when we took the spent bones out to him.

I used the last of a container of beef broth but before I threw the box away, I added about a half of cup of water to it, recapped it, gave it a good shake, then emptied the contents into the pot of beans I was cooking.  I was surprised to see that the water was a nice light brown color and it reminded me that this is a good way to get ‘all’ that I paid for from the container.  These beans and the ham mentioned above were turned into a delicious meal along with a side of collard greens.

I had some dishcloths that were stained and had seen better days but instead of tossing them I just relocated them from where I keep my dishcloths to where I keep my cleaning rags.  Yep, those old, stained dishcloths are now being used for cleaning cloths.

I started fermenting a jar of garlic honey this week following the instructions in this video.  I plan to use it in cooking and in the vinegar and honey drink I enjoy for those times I’m not feeling too well.

When prepping the garlic to make the fermented garlic honey I noticed that some of the garlic was just beginning to head in the wrong direction, so I chopped the most of it up and dehydrated it.  I left a few cloves in the refrigerator for cooking purposes but I will be sure to keep an eye on them for any kind of decaying.  If it does, I’ll either use the garlic immediately or chop and dehydrate the rest of it.

I washed zip-lock baggies in all sizes for the purpose of reusing.

I cut back my roses.  I try to do this in February every year along with fertilizing to get them off to a good growing season.

I have gardening chores for every month of the year:  January is to inventory seeds and order any that are needed as well as plan as much of my garden as possible.  February is the month I start transitioning from inside gardening chores to outside gardening chores such as prepping roses for the upcoming growing season, pruning fruit trees, starting seeds, and cleaning up the yard from winter debris.  We’ll have more cold weather, but those warmer days are starting to creep in and are perfect for getting ahead in the garden and yard.

Another thing I did this week was to take a leisurely walk outside in the yard and garden and made a list of things that needed to be done or that I wanted to get done before gardening starts in earnest!  I’ll start working on that list as we enjoy those warm days mentioned earlier.

We mowed the yard for the first time this year!  It took as long to clean up the yard from winter debris as it did to mow it!

I had two small pieces of pork tenderloin left from a meal we didn’t eat in our buffet style ‘leftovers’ meal we have once a week.  I could have frozen and then added them to a future pot pie, etc but instead I opted to chip it up and add it to some BBQ we were enjoying.  It blended right in and was eaten!

I read a lovely post by Annabel over at the Bluebirds are Nesting on the Farm that really struck a chord with me.  In it she made the following statement, “She works to be prepared for problems before they arise”.   Head on over and read her post and tell her that A Working Pantry sent you, I just know you’re going to enjoy it!

I made valentine treats for the little people in our lives.

Each treat cost approximately $1, everything else I already had on hand, and yes, the treat itself was purchased on sale!

We mailed Valentine goodies and treats to our grandchildren the first of February.  They got them this week! (not pictured) Our youngest grandchild loves to get mail and her mama is so good to do a video call with us when she opens G (grandma) & G (grandpa) mail.  I don't think I've ever seen a child gets so excited about receiving her own mail.  It's more than worth the cost of mailing packages to see her reaction!

I also made loaves of banana bread out of overripe bananas as valentine treats for some adults in our lives.  I'll package the loaves up in a pretty way before delivering them.

And finally, I've started updating my Goals 2022 page, check out what I ticked off the list this week!

That's it for this week ... look around you, how are you using your resources, your time, what’s that in your hand?

Until next time,

patsi

  1. Wow you have had a busy week. Those Valentine gifts are just lovely. I remember when one set of niece and nephew were young that I gifted them with some magazine and book subscriptions and how much they loved getting their own mail each month!

Shopping this week has mainly been for non-food items. We've noticed at the office that it is difficult to get our usual paper orders - there is a shortage - so - anticipating that this might become an issue in other areas, and knowing that I was getting a bit low, I restocked TP, Paper Towels and Kleenex so I am now good through to June. I have a couple of other items on my list that I'll restock on the weekend. Stores are still pretty well stocked here but prices are really increasing. I was lucky to get a few of these items on sale.
I cooked up a pound of ground beef this week and I always add a can of lentils - I then half the mixture and make two different meals - at least 4 portions each so that really stretches the meat. I also cooked up a pot of soup from a dry soup mix that I have (lentils, split peas, barley & rice) and I added a can of tomatoes, a couple of stock cubes and then blitzed it when it was done. I put a couple of servings into the freezer and the rest will do lunches through the weekend. I haven't felt like big meals this week and it has been busy at the office so soup and a sandwich has been just fine.

    1. Margie, thank you! Looks like you're doing well with 'what's in your hand.' I love reading how others stretch and use what they have in their hands!

  2. I love those videos from the grandkids! We had some facetime with our one month old grandson and it was nice to see him even though he is just in the picture right now and not interacting yet.

We had gotten carried away with the purchase of 2 pound rolls of sugar cookie dough at the discount store awhile back because they were only 50 cents. We still had four rolls and had gotten to the point of scowling at them in the freezer because we found we were really not a fan of the sugar cookies after they were baked. So I put on my thinking cap and took one out and thawed it and mixed in a cup of oats, a cup of pecans and 2 cups of chocolate chips. I pressed the dough into a baking sheet and made bar cookies and they are delicious! The other three will be used in a similar way.

Also from the discount store was a huge bag of biscuit mix that only requires the addition of water which I thought would be good emergency provisions. But, it has sugar in it and is weirdly sweet which we do not care for in a biscuit. So this week I repurposed it to make blueberry muffins and they were perhaps the best I have ever made! I topped them each with about two teaspoons of yellow cake mix that was leftover from using part of a box of mix. That was a delicious muffin topper and no effort to mix it up. I may even start using yellow cake mix on all my muffins and some other baked goods as well. It would be fine to use up a mix that goes out of date.

Our Sam's Club has not had bread flour for 4-5 months and it is hard to even find 5# bags here. This was starting to worry me as we watched our storage buckets empty one by one. Yesterday we decided to take a ride up to the mountains and eat at our favorite steak house for an early Valentine's dinner out. So, we stopped at the Sam's up there and they had piles of bread flour so we were able to restock. I just don't get the supplies and they way they are hit or miss these days. This was only 50 miles from home.

    1. Lana, aren't those videos fun! Our youngest gets us on video and just runs around, I guess she likes us to watch her. She slows down just long enough to have a brief conversation with us and then she's off again. We love it!

I don't understand the supply chain either because we are finding the very same kind of thing here that you did with the bread flour. It makes no sense!

You have impressed me with the way you found ways to use the cookie dough and the biscuit mix. This is the kind of thing I'm really trying to focus on, finding ways to use what we have.

      love your post!

  3. Wonderful productive week,Patsi. I envy you bring able to start work in the garden. While we had some warm weather here this week it's still to early to start any outdoor project.
This week I made truffles for Valentine's treats. I had to sample one and they were unbelievably delicious. I had everything on hand. I had some oranges and after they were eaten I tested the skin and made orange scones using almond flour. I had some leftover egg roll soup in the freezer that made a second appearance as lo mien I thickened the soup with arrowroot and added some leftover meat and mixed in rice noodles. I baked 2 dozen cranberry scones using almond flour and 3 dozen 3 ingredient chocolate chip cookies. We did shop for fresh vegetables at the farm this week. With scraps from cardmaking I made embellishments for future cards. I have been saving cardboard from the backs of legal pads and shoeboxes and cut them up into usable sizes for crafting rather than buying chipboard.

    1. Cookie, how do you test the skin on an orange, I've never heard of this before.

I looked at some chipboard at a craft store and decided that cardboard such as you mentioned would do just fine so I left the chipboard in the store.

I bet your kitchen smelled good with all that baking! Yum!

  4. I love reading your posts. I find them very inspiring. As soon as I retire (16 weeks) I am going to become Patsy 2. LOL But really, I am so tired at night I get nothing done. I can't wait to have all day to actually prepare for the future.

  5. Hi Patsi. You reminded me that I have some garlic in the cupboard I need to do something with. Sounds like you've been having a good week. Is your health drink apple cider vinegar, honey and garlic in water? Just wondering.

    1. Hi Laura! My health drink is water, acv and honey. If I'm not feeling well then, I switch the plain honey to fermented garlic honey. Does that make sense?
