Hunkering Down 2024: Weeks 43 & 44

It's the first day of November and I had to remind myself to do our hunkering down post as it's been a couple of weeks since I did one!

I've been so busy launching our Circling the Wagons class, that time has gotten away from me!  But, alas, I did remember so let's get to it!

Our financial goal for October was to make a double payment on our targeted debt and ... we stretched and skimped and stretched some more and did it!!!!  Whew, that felt good after the fact, but not so good during the sacrificing to reach the goal!

But, as I've said before, we are own calvary and we have to make our own plan and then work it.  An unimplemented plan is a useless plan!

Make it reasonable and doable and then stick to it!

That's it for this week, what about you, how did your week go and what financial goals are you working toward?

until next time,

  1. I've had a self-care week. I saw a consultant dermatologist who told me that an unusual spot I was concerned about on my face is actually skin cancer, as I suspected. I am now waiting for an appointment to have it removed, sometime in January or February. I was very lucky to get an appointment to see my GP on the same day after speaking with the dermatologist about another matter. My doctor carried out a small procedure there and then. I am now at home licking my wounds and feeling relieved that 1 thing is sorted and one is in the pipeline. I am also grateful that I don't have to pay for medical treatment.

  2. It was one of "those" weeks here, but I feel good about the outcome. On Monday, I went to start a load of laundry and the machine wouldn't start when I pushed the button -- and the Start button stayed pushed in. The appliance repairman that I've previously used has retired, and his son has taken over the business (with not so favorable reviews). I checked with several friends and they all recommended the same alternate service (which they preferred over mine). They sent a serviceman on Tuesday, who diagnosed the issue and informed me (after having his office check to see if the part was in stock) that the part was discontinued. So, Tuesday evening, I went shopping for a new washing machine. I'd thought about buying a matching set, but decided against it. The one I bought was on sale ($250 off) and they delivered and installed it yesterday morning. They even swapped the pedestal from my old one to the new one at no additional fee. Yes, you can tell one is new and one is old, but it works for me. And, it's an energy efficient product, so my water and electricity usage should be less, and there may be a rebate on my income taxes.

    1. Lori, I feel your pain, we had to give in and replace our washer and dryer this summer! We got ours on sale too!

  3. It was both payday and pension money this week so now all the first of the month bills have been done - I did a big grocery shop and got a few more things tucked into the pantry.
My plan is to join the "3 Rivers Challenge" in January when I try to get through the month without purchasing any food and then follow up in February and March with only a small amount being allocated to some fresh food - otherwise I plan to eat from the freezer, fridge & pantry. I will add a few extras in December for Christmas but won't be going overboard and spending a ton beforehand - that just defeats the purpose.
Money saved will go towards paying down debt.
