~ He's done! ~
What am I talking about? Hubby finished his doctor ordered 36 weeks of cardio physical therapy this week! I can't tell you how happy that makes me! We can return to being masters of our own time ... as much as anyone can. He has another fitness program lined up to begin, but for this one we can choose the time we go ... which just makes my heart sing! He is determined to not lose the progress he has made, and I am 100% behind him supporting him all the way. Whew! What a journey this has been ... that has ended with the best possible outcome, and we give God the glory and praise. If you're new and or haven't read our story, you can do that HERE! Thank you to all who have supported us through this journey ... in so many ways ... we pray God's blessings upon you.
(This is one of several marigolds I planted this year ... they are thriving!)
What did our frugal life look like this week? Let's take a peek ...
I turned some dehydrated onions into onion powder! It's time to harvest this year's onions and that means it's also time to finish using up the onions we have on our pantry shelves from last year. 'Out with the old and in with the new' looks like 'use the old up so you have room to replace it with the new' at our house. With limited 'pantry space' we want to be good stewards of what we have been blessed with and use that space prudently ... which means we don't keep stuff in our pantry that we don't or want use or more of an item than we will use in a specified amount of time.
Take a peek at one of my 'drying' areas! These little red colanders each hold something different:
mullein yellow flower
calendula flower plantain
oregano
tarragon
sage
yarrow
Whenever possible I like to allow my herbs to air dry naturally and that's what's happening in the picture. Since this picture was taken, I added mullein leaves and another colander of calendula flowers.
I continued with cleaning and inventorying my pantry this week, but since we were involved with VBS, I didn't have time to finish the area I started. That's okay, I can live with the chaos another few days, planting seeds about God into the hearts and minds of children is far more important than getting my pantry cleaned and organized.
A friend from church texted me wanting to know if I wanted some cucumbers, that she had a 5-gallon bucket full for me if I wanted them. Yes, indeed I wanted them and off we went to her house to get them. While there she also gave me a large cabbage and a large rutabaga from her garden. Her garden was beautiful, in fact her whole yard was beautiful. It was a joy just to be able to walk around in it and soak in its beauty. I came away inspired with ideas for my own yard and garden.
I harvested squash from our garden and used several of them to make up
squash casseroles for the freezer. I recently used the last one we had so it's time to restock!
Here are some things I/we cooked this week:
squash casserole
seasoned green beans
a Boston butt for making BBQ
air-fried seasoned chicken legs
air-fried seasoned squash halves
purple hull peas
fresh potatoes from the garden
roasted vegetables
cheesecake for an event
pig-pickin cake for an event
brownies for us to enjoy at home

We're getting ready to make our 3rd payment on our new to us vehicle, remember our goal is to make two payments per month, this 3rd payment will be the first one for June. In order to do that we have to be very mindful of our spending, and I want to share with you today a new tool that I will start utilizing this next week. It's an old-fashioned pen and paper spending tracking journal. Back in January/February I found these planners on clearance at the local big box store and purchased two. I use one of them for writing 'themed' Scriptures and the other one has been sitting on my bookshelf with no clear purpose. It now has a purpose; it will become my/our spending tracker. Everything that we spend on any given day will go written down on that date, with the exception of our bills and personal allowances. I'll share what the first week of tracking looks like in the next post. By tracking our spending, it will be easier to see where our money is going and the areas that we could possibly cut. It's a financial tool that I think will benefit us in reaching our goal ... yes, we are determined! What financial tools do you use to help you reach your financial goals?
You can see that there is plenty of space on each day for tracking where our money is going.
And finally, ladies, the next lesson (lesson 5) in our Bible study on Hagar has been posted HERE! I hope you'll pop over and take a look. That's all for this week!
I hope you've found something in my ramblings that will help and or encourage you in the upcoming week.
Until the next time ...
Cardiac rehab has been a life changer from many I have known. It's a great "restart" and your husband is wise to build on his progress. So glad he had such a positive outcome. My husband is a heart attack survivor too, and he works hard to stay fit and healthy. Really, it's the best gift they can give us -- more time together!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Murphy, I totally agree that it is the best gift they can give us, I want all the time with him I can have. So glad you still have your hubby with you too!
DeleteSo happy for your hubs!!! Great recovery. PTL
ReplyDeleteCheryl, thank you and yes, indeed ... PTL!
DeleteThe time seems to have flown by since you first mentioned your husband's trip to the ER. It sounds like he has been working really hard on his recovery and is keen to build on the progress he has made. It is uplifting to hear of such a positive outcome. I wish you both the best going forward.
ReplyDeleteI have had a busy week as my daughter and son-in-law have been staying with us. We haven't seen them both together since their wedding last October, so it has been a real treat.
I much prefer to jot things down in longhand in a book when making lists/plans etc. I know that some folk like to do computer spreadsheets, but to me that just doesn't feel right. I suppose that it is just the way I was taught to do things and youngsters today will have a very different view on things. The very act of writing something seems to make it more real and tracking spending this way does help to focus the mind. A pretty notebook is a definite bonus!
Tracy, I too prefer the pen and paper method. There is just something about writing it down that makes you more aware of where your money is going or not going!
DeleteFinishing up rehab is real milestone! How well we remember, twice. We were happy recipients of cucumbers and zucchini from our neighbors this week. The only thing we are growing is peppers just because we pulled the pots out of the garage and hubby fertilized them and off they went. They are loaded. Our plum tree is loaded too and we are holding our breath and hoping the squirrels stay out of them. Hubby hung some old CD's out there on the branches and they seem to be doing the trick. After a seven week wait our new dishwasher was installed on Friday. (YAY) Now our 47 year old dish drainer can go back to the garage.
ReplyDeleteYou are doing well on your goal of paying down your new vehicle. Every dollar counts! I keep our budget on an old fashioned four column ledger. Every Monday I record everything in the checkbook over to the ledger. This works well for us but drives our accountant daughter crazy! I got my first SS check this month and made a new budget. My big goal for a year has been to get help for my husband who has to do everything here because of my genetic disease. I have hired a maid! I am entirely out of my comfort zone with this. I am just going to be transparent about it the first time she comes. She is a young woman from our church. There is also enough each month for Hubby to have someone come and do the yard if he is not able to do it himself. I also found someone to clean our windows. We have 22 big windows with 15 panes of glass in each plus storm and screens to be taken out and cleaned. Our hands have been tied because Hubby cannot get on a ladder. It will be so good to get rid of the grime! I hope to have this done yearly if we are happy with the work.
But sadly we have just been crushed by grief lately. My Mom had two much younger sisters who were only a few years older than my sister and me. We spent our growing up years having fun with our 'Cousin Aunts'. Five weeks ago the younger of them died suddenly of a massive stroke and the second one died early this morning in the care of Hospice after being moved there just yesterday. My sister in law died of cancer two weeks ago. And my sister's best friends' husband died just a few days ago. My sister has been friends with her for over fifty years. What breaks my heart the most is none of them were believers. All I can do is pray for the ones left behind.
Lana, I'm so glad that you are using your SS to make your lives easier.
DeleteI'm so sorry though that you've had so much loss and grief lately and yes, knowing that they were not believers makes it even harder. Yes, pray for the ones left behind, they can still choose.
I had been washing dishes by hand for several weeks myself because our dishwasher stopped working too. I was finally able to tinker with it enough to get it running again, so I retired my dish drainer again as well!
I hope you both have a great week!
I am so happy to hear that your husband has recovered so well with his therapy. May he continue to have good health. I've found that, once I set my budget, it really helps to keep costs written down manually, pen and paper, for at least the first several months, until that spending goal has been met and actions become habit. I use the "travel expense" pages in my DayRunner and just rename the columns. I have folder pocket inserts in my planner, from my working days, where I put receipts, until I record them on the "expense" page. Tallying up each column at the end of the month (especially groceries) can be eye-opening and clearly tells me where I need to conserve! Love your planner idea for recording daily expenditures.
DeleteLori, thank you! That 'eye-opening' experience is the purpose for recording where our money goes. It's so easy to feel relatively certain that one is living frugally until the numbers stare us in the face. Even though I think we are doing pretty well, I'm sure this will show areas that we can improve in!
DeleteCongratulations to your husband finishing cardiac rehab!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of your planner! Can’t wait to see updates!
Lee Ann, thank you! We are excited that he is done as well!
DeleteI've just started entering data in my expense planner and already I am finding myself more aware of what we're spending. The funny thing is I thought I was already aware, but this is making me more aware!!
Congratulation Patsy on your husband's passing through the rehab.
ReplyDeleteLana, I am deeply sorry for the losses you and your family have experienced.
Terri, thank you!
