~ from my home to yours ... ~
I love our little home, it's perfect for us! There's warmth and love within its walls and yes, mason jars, home preserved foods, herbs, books, WIP projects, lots of snuggly quilts, a swing on the front porch and a rocking chair nearby! We call it home and we call ourselves blessed. We give God the glory for He has had and continues to have His hand in it all!

Summer Series 2026: Building a Pantry with $5 a week ... #7

 Summer Series 2026: Building a Pantry with $5 a week ... #7

I hope everyone is reading the comments; they are so inspiring.  Thank you to everyone who is sharing your selections!

With each week's entry, we'll start out reviewing the rules ...

Total must be $5 or less each week not including taxes.

Must be a separate purchase ... in other words it cannot be hand-picked items from our weekly grocery haul that totals $5 or less.

All items must come from a grocery store, farmers market, etc.  In other words they must be purchased.  No running out to the garden and putting a grocery store price on items harvested or shared with us.  This challenge is meant to stretch us in utilizing a small amount of money to help build up and or restock our pantry.

Must be items we regularly use.  This will keep us from seeing a good deal on something 'we might like' and spending our 'challenge money' only to never get around to trying it or finding out we don't like it at all.  This challenge is for our tried and true pantry building basics.  Think mid - long term pantry stocking.

This challenge includes all things in our pantry:  food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.

One more guideline ... no rolling money over from week to week.  We have to spend it or lose it!

This challenge will end on September 21st, the last day of summer.

Here's what I added to my pantry this week for the sum total of $5!

These chili ready tomatoes were on sale for 4 for $5.  They add just a bit more flavor to a pot of chili that needs to be put together and served quickly ... for those times when there is no time for that slow simmering that allows all the flavors to meld.

G & G camp is over and hubby and I are taking a few days to rest and recover.  I'll be back next week with lots of catching up and regular posting.  In the meantime, please post what you add to your pantry this week for this challenge, it's so inspiring to me and many others.

In next week's post, I'll be sharing a collective picture of what I've added to my winter pantry thus far from this challenge along with the week's challenge results.

Okay, now it's your turn ... what did you spend your $5 on this week and if it's a food, how do you plan on using it?

Are you finding this challenge challenging?

Are you beginning to see that every little bit helps!

Until the next time ...

  1. This week my husband added 3 packs of 50 each disposable Teri towels for cleaning window and a two pack of paint rollers, cost for all was 4.00. I used my Safeway points and got a 24 pk of bottled water for free and a 5lb bag of potatoes for free. Then used my 3.00 off coupon and got 2 avocados and pack of mushrooms for .38 cents. Total for week was 4.38.

  2. The house feels so quiet after the Grandchildren go home! I have been so hungry for chili lately but not in the hot weather.

We added two quart containers of plain yogurt at 2.45 each for a total of $4.90. They will be used in smoothoes.

    1. Lana, have you ever tried freezing yogurt in 'smoothie' portion sizes? I think I am going to try it and see how it works up in smoothies. It would certainly allow us to take advantage of yogurt sales and not have to pay full price for it.

Our weather has been almost unbearable with heat indexes hovering between 105 and 110 daily. I'm ready for fall temps and yes, bring on the chili when the temps allow it.

  4. The green peppers that were on sale last week at 5 for $4 were still on sale this week so I bought 5 more. They were made quick work of by being sliced up in the food processor, flash frozen and vacuum sealed . 4 quarts added to the freezer for winter. I found out that on Tuesday's it's "senior day" giving seniors an additional 10 percent off . So today I"m going bargain hunting for this week's stock up. Cookie

    1. Cookie, we like to take advantage of 'senior days' too, every little bit helps, doesn't it? That's a good deal on peppers, I think I will see what our stores have since peppers didn't happen in the garden this summer.

  5. Bananas were $.35 a pound which is a price I haven't seen in years. I had to guess their weight but ended up getting $6.00 worth. They are being dehydrated and then put back for winter snacks. $6.00 will make a large amount of banana chips

  6. With Autumn upon us in just a couple of weeks, I'm ready for a big crock pot of chili. I picked up a half peck box of regular round tomatoes from a stand near where my mom lives and canned up 5 pints of stewed tomatoes to have on hand in my pantry. Nothing but tomatoes and a Tbsp. of lemon juice -- all natural and all for $4.50. I have to watch my sodium intake, and commercially canned products typically contain too much and have other non-pronounceable ingredients. No thank you, I'll make my own.

    1. Lori, that's my usual way of canning tomatoes as well, but this year, due to the intense heat and humidity, tomatoes didn't happen in our garden along with several other things. So, plan 'B' went into action!
