~ from my home to yours ... ~
I love our little home, it's perfect for us! There's warmth and love within its walls and yes, mason jars, home preserved foods, herbs, books, WIP projects, lots of snuggly quilts, a swing on the front porch and a rocking chair nearby! We call it home and we call ourselves blessed. We give God the glory for He has had and continues to have His hand in it all!

Summer Series 2026: Building a Pantry with $5 a week ... #8

 Summer Series 2026: Building a Pantry with $5 a week ... #8

I hope everyone is reading the comments; they are so inspiring.  Thank you to everyone who is sharing your selections!

With each week's entry, we'll start out reviewing the rules ...

Total must be $5 or less each week not including taxes.

Must be a separate purchase ... in other words it cannot be hand-picked items from our weekly grocery haul that totals $5 or less.

All items must come from a grocery store, farmers market, etc.  In other words they must be purchased.  No running out to the garden and putting a grocery store price on items harvested or shared with us.  This challenge is meant to stretch us in utilizing a small amount of money to help build up and or restock our pantry.

Must be items we regularly use.  This will keep us from seeing a good deal on something 'we might like' and spending our 'challenge money' only to never get around to trying it or finding out we don't like it at all.  This challenge is for our tried and true pantry building basics.  Think mid - long term pantry stocking.

This challenge includes all things in our pantry:  food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.

One more guideline ... no rolling money over from week to week.  We have to spend it or lose it!

This challenge will end on September 21st, the last day of summer.

As mentioned last week, this week, in addition to my weekly challenge results, I'm sharing a collective picture of what I've added in the first 8 weeks of the challenge.  But first ...

Here's what I added to my pantry for the sum total of $3.96 before tax this week ...

I sent hubby to do the pantry challenge shopping this week and he found these ham steaks on mark down from $2.99 to $.99 each.  He would have gotten another one, but this was all they had.  I added them to the freezer part of our pantry for use this winter in making hot ham and cheese sandwiches.  Hubby did good!

And now it's time to take stock of what we've accomplished thus far ...

Here's what I've added in the first 8 weeks of this challenge ...

Look at what I've been able to add to my pantry with $5 or less each week!  I'm quite pleased with the possibilities these items represent and look forward to seeing what the remaining weeks in this challenge will add to these items!

How about you, are you surprised and pleased at what you've been able to add to your pantry with as little as $5 a week?

Okay, now it's your turn ... what did you spend your $5 on this week and if it's a food, how do you plan on using it?

Until the next time ...

  2. Hi Patsi from Australia and your hubby did really well with finding the ham steaks at such a low price.

We are currently cutting down what we have in our pantries as now we are eating far less as we get older and I am pleased with what we have used so far from our pantry store room. We are also just stocking back up on a few things as we need them.

I will catch up on a few weeks of pantry storage here too -
    - Last week I found a craft store that had a 70% off sale and found magnetic catch sunglasses cases with lovely floral patterns on them on sale for $4.48 ea reduced from $14.99 ea. As they are hard to find large enough to fit sunglasses in I bought 2 one for each car as we around 45mins to an hour each way to get to anywhere to do errands/appointments living in the country.

    - This week we were walking around trying to use a bit of time in a rural country town a long way away from home between appointments. We stopped in at a local op shop that also sells discounted food and we managed to find 5 x 175g chedder flavoured packets of shapes biscuits for $1 per packet. We find these great for easy meals and for dips too. These are usually $4 per pack in most supermarkets full price.

Hope everyone had a wonderful week stocking up their pantries.

    Lorna.

    1. Lorna, we are in the same season of life and are doing the same thing. We don't eat as much which means our pantry doesn't need to be as big as it has been in the past. I will always strive to keep and maintain a well-stocked pantry as long as I'm able, but it's wasteful to have so much on hand that it can't be used before it needs to be tossed.
You found some good deals ... way to shop!!!

  3. We were a tad over at 5.78 for a 96 ounce box of Bisquick from Sam's Club. We love Bisquick pancakes and it is sugar free which we need

    1. Lana, Bisquick is a staple in our pantry as well. We use it in making pancakes and in making sausage balls around the holidays.

  5. I really like this challenge as it gets me looking for bargains that I can add to my pantry and freezer for later use. The past two weeks I've bought fruit at my local greengrocer. Last week it was a large bag of green apples for $3.99 and this week a bag of lemons for $3.85. I peeled and chopped all the apples, stewed them with cinnamon, froze portions. We'll have this with plain yoghurt as a snack. Juiced the lemons and froze in icecube trays. I'll defrost and use these in salad dressings and drinks and in icings for slices or cake.
When I shop next week, I might buy another bag of apples if there's some left.
