The Ways of My Household ... 11/1/2016

I guess you’ve noticed I’m late to start blogging this week!  There’s a very good reason … our internet/house phone went down.  Our whole area was affected!  We don’t know if it was Hurricane Matthew related or if something else happened.  At any rate it came back up overnight so here I am playing catch-up!

Are you ready for this issue of The Ways of My Household?

Here you go, here’s how my week shaped up …

Note:  My Vicky Challenge Savings are added in at the appropriate places.

I started freezing the sweet potatoes we gleaned about a month ago.  I wash each potato really well with a scrub brush, pierce them with a fork, lay them out on a large baking sheet and bake them until they are half way cooked.  I let them cool and then vacuum seal them in bags for future use.  I added 19 large sweet potatoes to the freezer part of my pantry.

I chopped up the peppers I mentioned harvesting in last week’s post and added 10 snack baggies (1/4 cup in each) of red bell peppers and 30 snack baggies (1/4 cup in each) of jalapeƱo peppers to the freezer part of my pantry.  The cayenne peppers are in the process of drying on my window shelf.

I decorated for fall using what I had on hand.

My husband asked me if I would bake a German Chocolate cake for him to take to his co-workers at the election office where he is helping with early voting.  I had everything in my pantry to bake it except the coconut needed for the icing ...  which he purchased on his way home one evening.  I’ll be watching for sales on coconut during the upcoming holidays and purchasing enough to freeze to last until next year’s holiday sales roll around again.

Speaking of cakes, I received my first cake order for Thanksgiving!  It’s for a carrot cake! Yeah!  A little extra pantry building money!

I earned a $5 Amazon gift card through Swagbucks.  I turned it into a $10.50 savings with zero out of pocket for me by purchasing this book used, for $.01 plus $3.99 shipping instead of paying the ‘new’ book price of $14.50.

I dried our laundry without the use of a clothes dryer, actually our clothes dryer has stopped working and as of right now we have no plans to replace it.  Saved $2
We saved $68.57 using coupons and shopping sales for food and non-food pantry items.
I gave our refrigerator a good deep thorough cleaning and removed one of the shelves.  Our refrigerator has shelving that is low in the refrigerator which makes it hard to see what’s on the lower two shelves, so I removed one and re-adjusted the remaining two.  Now, when we open the refrigerator door we can see what’s on the lower shelf all the way to the back and what’s on the upper shelf without having to get in a pretzel format!
I’ve started my fall pantry inventory … so thankful to have it to inventory!
I added compost material to the compost bin.

I’m on day 42 of my 100 Day Crochet Challenge.  When I finish my current project (pictured) I want to make some pillowcases and edge them.

I did my first non-practice grub rose!  These little things are so cute; they’re going to be making an appearance on several future projects!
Not working a job outside my home savings $100.
The USDA’s ‘moderate’ Food Budget for a family the size of ours is $589.70 monthly.  In October we spent less than $150, that’s a savings of $439.70
Thus far this year my Vicky Challenge Savings  savings/earnings have been $13,012.17 add this week’s amount ($625.77) and I/we have saved $13,637.94.
Now it’s your turn, what have you done to build up your pantry, care for your household or live frugally this week?
