The Ways of My Household ... 1/8/2017

The big news this week for us has been the huge winter storm that hit the south then went up the east coast.   At one time we were predicted to get ice along with 5+ inches of snow so we prepared accordingly.  Instead we got a whole lot of bitter cold air!  Brrrrrrr!  While I would have liked to have gotten the snow, I’m glad the freezing rain didn’t stay around long enough to be an issue.

So, how did my week shape up in and around prepping for a winter storm?

We saved $192.96 using coupons and shopping sales for food and non-food pantry items.  (I got my trip to JoAnn’s Fabrics this week that I requested for Christmas and saved a whopping $123.43 by taking advantage of sales and using coupons. I saved more than I spent!)

I took an idea I read on Vicki’s Kitchen and Garden and started my ‘spring cleaning’ this week.  I have a list of everything that needs to be done, broken down into 10 -15 minute increments, and will work on 1 thing each day until the list is complete. By the time I’m done I will have touched everything in the house.  I want to have my ‘spring cleaning’ done by gardening time which is March for us.  Thank you Vicki for the inspiration!

We purchased enough hog jowl to make 25 more packages to add to the freezer part of our pantry.  We brought it home and sliced it thin like bacon.  The price per pound was $1.28 versus bacon being almost $4/lb.  We’ll let this replace bacon in our meal planning until it’s all gone or until the price of bacon comes down a bit.

I started a new excel log for recording our expenses for 2017.  This will give us a record of what we’re spending as well as a visual reminder of where our money is going.

I stitched up an apron for my little grandson and of course we couldn’t forget his little sister so I included this cute little number for her (I already had it made.)   They will go in the mail on Monday.  I hope they like them!

I also cut out valentine treat bags for the little ones in our lives.  I hope to get them stitched up in the coming week and then begin to fill them with some valentine goodness.
I’m on day 95 of my 100 Day Crochet Challenge.  I finished stitching up dishcloths using the 100% cotton yarn I had‘leftover from other projects’ and then started on my big project … an afghan/blanket.  I’m almost through with this 100 Day Challenge and while the days have not all been consecutive, by the time I’m through they will total 100.   I have thoroughly loved learning how to crochet this way.  Saved $10 by making the dishcloths out of leftover from other projects yarn.

Not working outside my home … Saved $100

This week’s entry starts a new year of Vicky Challenge Savings .  This week we saved/earned $302.96.
Now it’s your turn, what have you done to build up your pantry, care for your household or live frugally this week?
