30 Day Preserving Challenge: Day 6, Blueberries

Here we are at day 6 in this challenge and this time I'm preserving something that I did not grow.  It's something that I purchased at a grocery store on sale and brought home and preserved.  There are many ways to obtain food to preserve that do not involve gardening and this is one …

(nice, plump blueberries)

We have blueberry bushes but only two of them are big enough to produce.  This means I have to purchase enough, when I find them on sale, to preserve if I'm going to have blueberries throughout the year at a price I can afford.

That's what I did this week.  I purchased blueberries, brought them home, washed them up and divided them into 1/3 cup increments.  Into the freezer part of my pantry they went where they will wait to be used in smoothies.

We're at the beginning of blueberry season in our area so I'll be looking for another good sale to purchase more.  I'd like to make a few jars of blueberry pie filling and add a few more smoothie size bags to my freezer.

My pantry is intentional, purposeful, simple, practical, frugal and what works for my family.  It’s the food items and household supplies that keep my household running smoothly ready and available when they are needed.  It’s my contribution to our family’s economy and my work-from-home ‘job.'

  2. That is fabulous Patsy that you bought the blueberries on a good sale too to fill up your freezer with.

We do that with strawberries when they are in season and on sale too as we don't produce enough ourselves for the year. We make jam out of them as well as use this to flavour our homemade yoghurt.

Around a month ago I also saw a big sale on frozen blueberries on a half price special in 500 g bags and purchased quite a few for the freezer to make blueberry pies and to use in muffins and to eat as well. Here blueberries are so expensive to buy fresh unfortunately in Australia that I tend to buy them only when I see the frozen ones on a good special.

Have a fantastic week and keep up the wonderful preserving challenge.

    1. Lorna, this is the time of the year that I really watch sales for fresh produce. It's another way to preserve and add to the pantry without breaking the bank!

  3. I love blueberries and hope the U-pick farms will have some to pick this year with all the rain we have had. In the summer, I freeze them and I love to grab a handful of frozen berries. I haven't found them on sale in the store yet. Paula in Kansas

  4. We go blueberry picking every summer. I always pick enough to get us through the year. Hubby loves blueberry pancakes and muffins. They taste so good in the winter. The ones in the store in the winter taste awful.

    1. Making Cents Of It All, there's nothing like a fresh from the bush blueberry for taste is there!

  5. I buy the boxes of blueberries when they are cheap, put the box and all into a plastic freezer bag. That way, I can use just a few at a time for smoothies or more for whatever.

  6. How many pounds of blueberries get you through a year?

    1. Tricia, It's usually whatever we're able to afford or harvest each year. We gauge our usage on what we have, when we run out, we wait until the next harvest or sale.
