30 Day Preserving Challenge: Day 7, Turmeric

Today, I'm preserving turmeric root.  I grow turmeric root but haven't reached the point where I'm growing enough for our needs, so when I have opportunity to purchase good quality root, I do.  That's what I did this week.

Here's how I preserved it …

I washed it up and then chopped it using my food chopper.

Here it is chopped and ready for the dehydrator.

I spread it out on the dehydrator tray and ran the dehydrator at 125 degrees for approximately 3 - 4 hours.

And finally, here it is dehydrated and jared.  I'll continue to repeat this process until I have a couple of jars full.

How will I use this dehydrated turmeric?  It'll be used in making cider fire or ground into a powder when needed.  I try to keep all the ingredients on hand at all times for making cider fire so that when I need to make it, I don't have to run around to several different stores looking for the ingredients.  I have not been able to find turmeric locally so when we're out of town I always look for it and buy it if I can.  That's how I got this turmeric.

My pantry is intentional, purposeful, simple, practical, frugal and what works for my family.  It’s the food items and household supplies that keep my household running smoothly ready and available when they are needed.  It’s my contribution to our family’s economy and my work-from-home ‘job.'
