"Don't Pour That Down the Drain!"

I could have titled today's post one of three different things ...

"Getting Ahead in the Kitchen" ...

or ...

"Waste Not, Want Not" ...

or "Don't Pour That Down the Drain!" which is the one I chose!

Recently, I opened some home-canned stew beef to use in a beef pie.  The jars had quite a bit of broth in them that I didn't need in the pie, so I set the broth in the refrigerator for use at a later date.

Today, I took it out of the refrigerator, added some water to it and used it to cook rice.  Once the rice was cooked and cooled, I bagged it up and added it to the freezer part of my pantry.

I could have poured the leftover broth down the drain and that would have been the end of it, but I'm really trying not to waste food so I decided to use it.

The end results are that I have 3 bags of beef flavored rice cooked and in the freezer ready to be used in a future meal.

Not only did I not pour the broth down the drain, but I got ahead in the kitchen with future meals!  Waste not!  Want not!

  1. Thank you for sharing this idea, Patsy. I haven't tried canning meat yet (as I mentioned in a previous comment), but appreciate this idea for when I do.

I already do similar things. I keep the juice from left over canned fruit in the fridge and use it to make smoothies or smoothie Popsicle. I keep veggie and fresh herb scraps in a bag in the freezer to use for making soup stock (as well as poultry carcasses, of course). I save bread ends in the freezer to use for making stuffing for our turkey, bread puddings (sweet or savoury) or bread crumbs. It's like making free food from things that were headed for the garbage!

  2. Great minds think alike! I have 2 cups of chicken broth in my fridge from jars of chicken that I opened yesterday. I will use it for making rice tonight. I save cubed bread in my freezer mainly for French toast casserole. Our grandchildren absolutely adore it so anytime we are going to see them I make it or take along the ingredients to make it at their house. Did you know that the juice from a can of garbanzo beans can be used as an egg substitute? Our daughter even makes meringue cookies out of it and they are delicious!

    1. Lana, I did not know that about the juice from a can of garbanzo beans. I'll have to make a note to try this the next time I use a can of garbanzo beans.

    2. Lana, how do you do the egg substitute, measurement wise? Any tips on how to do it? I'm curious for emergency purposes. I can my own chick peas for my pantry, so I'd have access to this even if I couldn't get access to buying eggs for any reason.
