Facing Financial Hardship: Day 11 (Final Class)

Facing Financial Hardships

Day 11

Here we are at the last day of class and it’s time to look back and share what we’ve learned.

We kicked the class off by being informed that we had just lost our largest source of income and what we would need to do immediately.

We talked about what we would do with our last paycheck.

We talked about expenses we would need to cut from our budget.

We talked about how to handle unexpected auto repairs on a reduced or zero budget.

And then Murphy moved in and anything that could go wrong did …

We dealt with an unexpected house repair.

We had to figure out how we were going to pay the next month’s rent or mortgage.

We dealt with a mouse infestation and the heartbreak of having to throw out some of our pantry items, which are so desperately needed during this time of unemployment.

We dealt with an injury and the added expenses that came with it.  We also talked about where we were mentally.

Then we talked about the emotional side of being unemployed …

When we hit bottom emotionally …

When our spouse hits bottom emotionally …

And when we want to throw ourselves a pity party because of the things we can’t afford anymore … the little luxuries in life.

So …  looking back, what have you learned that would help you should you ever be faced with an unemployment issue similar to our scenario?

  1. We heard yesterday that our oldest son is being furloughed from his engineering job at at Honda because cars are not selling. This is the first time we have had the worry of a child not having a job but I know they are good with their money and will be alright. I will say that the more you go through this the easier it becomes because we knew that the Lord had our backs and would take care of us.

    1. Lana, I'm sorry your son is being furloughed. Yes, the Lord has our backs, and that is so comforting.

  2. About 5 years ago, we lost 75% of our income. We are back up to 50% of what we originally had and are now looking at potentially a few cuts due to everything happening with Covid-19. We learned a lot during that time!

This series has really helped me put a plan on paper for the future. My husband's pay is looking at being cut for the next year or two due to Covid-19. Mine has actually gone up slightly due to more hours, leaving us where we currently are. We had already planned to use the next year to clean up some financial things now that our finances have stabilized again and we started early now - we had planned on starting in June.

Thank you for this series, Patsy. I'm so sorry you lost your Mother during this time and am grateful that you continued the series with everything you have going on.

    Thank you and blessings,
    Lea

    1. Lea, We too are looking at trying to get our finances in order as best we can while we have an income. In my opinion, a lot of jobs stand to be affected by the repercussions of this virus. Thank you for your sweet words of encouragement and for your condolences.
