  2. Ohhhh, a 10# can of tomato sauce would work so well. Thanks for the suggestion.
    My tips: Remember to can at least some plain items. On many of the canning sites, I'm seeing so many who are fascinated with canning meals in jars and cakes cakes in jars, so they have grab and go items or something that is dump out and reheat, and I certainly understand that. However, I was recently reminded of the importance of having plain items on hand, as well. I just used my last jar of spaghetti sauce, and tomatoes don't come on for another 8-10 weeks. Thank goodness I still have jars of plain tomatoes on hand. I can use them to make spaghetti sauce, put them in a pot of chili, mix up some pizza sauce, drain them and chop for salsa, add them to a casserole -- multiple uses from a single plain product. Imagine if I'd made only spaghetti sauce and salsa! Another example -- I love spiced peaches around the holidays, yet I also can plain peaches; love pickled beats as an occasional salad topping, but it would be good to have some plain beets on hand, too. Also, for your cakes in a jar, if you're just putting them in canning jars to make them more portable and will go thru them fairly quickly, there really is no need to seal the jar with a new lid. Save some old lids to reuse with your dry storage, refrigerator items, and grab and go lunchtime sweets.

    1. Lori, that's a really good point to bring up! I completely agree, those quick-grab, heat and eat meals are great but just as great are single ingredient/plain ingredient foods! I do both but if I had to choose only one, I would have to go with the individual ingredients because of the many ways they can be used!
