Circling the Wagons …. in uncertain times and emergency situations

(Week 1, level 2)

For all the U.S. readers, I hope you've enjoyed your Thanksgiving Holiday ...

Maybe you stuffed yourself with yummy food ...

Maybe you were surrounded by family and friends ...

Maybe you had a contented quiet holiday alone ...

Maybe you traveled ...

Maybe you stayed home ...

Maybe you went 'Black Friday' shopping today ...

Maybe you shopped from home ...

Or maybe you opted to do no shopping at all ...

Regardless, it's time for us all to come back together for our Circling the Wagons class ...

Beginning Monday, December 2nd, we'll take our scenario up a notch, to level 2 ...

Between now and then, go back and read all level 1 posts and to get our minds really thinking about our scenario, answer the following question ...

What have you done during our break to move you and or your family closer to where you want to be in your 'living prepared' goal?

What did I/we do over the break to move ourselves to where we want to be in our 'living prepared' goal?  We purchased a solar lantern and I'm working on finishing up the notes for my disaster guide notebook.  The goal is to have my notebook up-to-date and ready to start adding more notes on Monday.  This is the kind of thing that one can get really behind in and 'just not do.'  This is also the kind of thing that you will be thankful you have on hand if you ever need it!

  1. Great minds think alike because we purchased a solar lantern too with usb port to charge up our phones. Haven't tried it yet.

    1. Anonymous, great minds indeed! The solar lantern we purchased has the same feature!

  2. I purchased 6 plug in flashlights that stay in an outlet and automatically come on during a power outage .

    1. Anonymous, hmmmm ... that sounds interesting. Can you give us more information about the flashlights? Brand? Etc?

  3. I cleaned a freezer and got rid of everything that was out of date or questionable. I felt this was important as keeping the freezers going during a challenge is important as well as making sure we had nutritious and safe food. Although I check our canned goods and freezers semi-annually, now seemed like a good time to do some extra diligence.

    1. Matty, that is very much an excellent idea! There is no need in taking up space and or energy with questionable foods in the freezer!

  4. I went through my stock of candles, wind-up torches and tinned/dried foods to check exactly what I have. I also charged up all my rechargeable batteries. I suggested buying a better camping stove, but my husband didn't get on board with that one, but I am going to buy some more gas canisters for the one we currently have. I noticed that the canister I have to hand is getting a little rusty, so I have been thinking about a drier to place to store the new ones.

    1. Tracy, you got a lot done, good for you! It's good that you found out that a new place to store the gas canisters is needed. That has the potential to save you money.

  5. Too busy with two separate batches of company to even think about anything else. The last ones go home tomorrow and then in a few days we will be able to get back on board. We are so thankful that our kids come to visit and bring the grandchildren so no complaints.

  6. I feel like I've done very little, but what I did get done would make life easier. During the Thanksgiving sales, I stocked up on a number of canned / tinned food items that would be beneficial in an outage. Although my purchases did NOT include cut green beans (which I needed an extra can of for making a green bean casserole for Thanksgiving dinner ... oops!), I did purchase some extra canned beans that are higher in protein (kidney, black, navy, and garbanzo/chickpeas; all are used in some recipes and are now in my rotation) and would be beneficial for filling stomachs in an emergency. I also printed out instructions for making a clay pot heater and for making a rocket stove for cooking (in the event that my natural gas supply was compromised for grilling, and to be able to assist others with being able to cook their own meals). These instructions are now in my Emergency binder.

    1. Lori, that's a good idea to put the instructions for making a clay pot heater and rocket stove in your emergency binder. Not having to dig through books on hand looking for info you know has to be in one of the books you have will make things less stressful if you ever need the instructions.

  7. We have added some more water storage in the basement. It’s in smaller sizes that are easier to handle. We have an inexpensive solar shower, and we got an old gas generator up and running and ready to use. I’m liking the idea of a solar lantern. I think I’m going to look into that. So far I’ve relied on candles and oil lamps. I also did some research into building a rocket stove with cinder blocks. I don’t have those lying around the place, but I may get a few. Mel in Co. I should add that getting the generator in working order gave my husband some peace of mind. An added bonus to this class!

    1. Mel, water is heavy so having some in manageable size containers is a big plus! Glad your generator is ready for use if it should be needed ... you just can't put a price on peace of mind!
