~ from my home to yours ... ~
I love our little home, it's perfect for us! There's warmth and love within its walls and yes, mason jars, home preserved foods, herbs, books, WIP projects, lots of snuggly quilts, a swing on the front porch and a rocking chair nearby! We call it home and we call ourselves blessed. We give God the glory for He has had and continues to have His hand in it all!

Thank you to everyone for commenting and participating, it’s the reason this class is a success.  I’ve taken so many notes of things that I needed to be reminded of or in some cases didn’t know, I feel empowered.  Having my notes together in one place ready to grab if needed is going to be a game changer.  I hope you are keeping up with your notes as well!

Okay, it’s time to address the elephant in the room! We’re on day 40 in our scenario without power and as we all know, power or the lack of it affects everything … supplies, transportation, fuel, manufacturing and the list goes on.

The elephant in the room is our prescription medications … by day 40, which is where we are now, for most, if not all of us, what little stockpile we had built up is gone or almost gone.  Now we’re faced with what for some, could be very serious issues!  What are we going to do about our prescription needs?

Is there an herbal substitute?

What if an antibiotic is needed?

Is there an essential oil that could help?

Are there lifestyle choices that would help?

What other options can you think of to explore?

What are you going to do?  Do you have a plan?  How are you going to handle this?

  1. This is very scary for my husband's heart but I am very well stocked with herbs and oils and know how to use them. Mostly I would make this a matter of prayer for wisdom and protection over our health.

    2. Lana, I totally agree, definitely a matter of prayer for wisdom and protection over our health.

  2. We are hugely lucky in that none of us have any major health issues or rely on any prescription meds. I do have one prescription for something minor, but it lasts for months and is something that I could do without, if necessary. I try to use natural remedies wherever possible and have several books on herbalism. I have hot water bottles, which could be used as cold packs too if necessary and I also have resistance bands and weights to help with physio. The bands were of great use last year when I twisted my knee.

    1. Tracy, I am trying to learn as much about natural remedies and herbalism as I can.

  3. I am on 3 prescription meds. All of them are filled for a 90-day supply. One requires refrigeration, so that is long past probability for use; the other 2 are pill form and, although I use a local pharmacy (national chain) for refills, I could likely get them to refill via mail order -- if they can get my records to their mail-order fulfillment center. The refrigerated one, while I'm concerned about it, I'm not worried. With all the extra walking I've been doing and eating more conscientiously, I'm burning weight, which impacts my cholesterol count and BP. This may be a win-win for me!

    1. Lori, I can see that a scenario such as this would be a forced form of 'getting in better shape' as everyone's physical workload would increase quite a bit.

    2. Lori…. Do asknyour pharmacist about the temps for meds. I was surprised when my pharmacist friend told me that some ofnthe refrigerated meds could be used fine with out refrigeration if they stayed below a certain temp, or were out of refrigeration for a certain time. It was longer than i thought!

  4. This is definitely food for thought. I am going to need to mull over this a bit and inventory what I have on hand to see what gaps need to be filled.

  6. This is a scary scenario for anyone with serious health problems. Some meds need to be tapered off, so if it looks like getting medication could be a problem, then if possible, cut medication back slowly. That would prolong the supply and not be as shocking to the body.

  7. I have several books, but have learnt far more from watching “HomeGrown Herbalist” on You Tube. He is a veterinarian as well as a herbalist. Fascinating, funny, easy to understand. Highly recommend you watch him. His name is Dr. Patrick Jones. I am now making my own tinctures for myself and family and seeing results. He also has a website by the same name and his blog posts are very informative.
