30 Day Food Preserving Challenge: Day 1, Strawberries

I'm working on a new challenge and this is the first entry!  Yes, I know I already have my '100 Day Sewing Challenge' going but this one is not sewing related, it's all about food preservation!

The rules are  …
The days do not have to be consecutive
Any method of food preservation counts

Here's 'Day 1' …

Yesterday my husband was offered the opportunity to pick strawberries from a patch near our home.  The cost … free!  You can't beat the price!  Strawberries in our area are selling for $3.50/quart.

So bright and early this morning hubby and I headed to the patch and picked for about an hour.  We estimate that we picked approximately 8 quarts!  We already had a busy day scheduled so in and around everything I washed, capped and prepared the berries and turned a little over half of them into these …

11 pints of strawberry pie filling.  I still have about 2 quarts of berries left in the refrigerator that I'll be preserving in a different way tomorrow.  And yes, we saved enough to go on a slice or two of pound cake!

What about you, are you preserving anything yet?

  1. Mmmm...that pie filling looks delicious, Patsy! I am the only big strawberry eater in my family. This is a great challenge! I haven't preserved anything lately, but one of my local stores has chicken leg quarters on sale this week for $0.59/lb. I will probably pick several bags up to can.

  2. A friend gave me a huge bag of rhubarb. After cleaning, I sliced it in the food processor and got 7 pints for freezing. I can't even imagine what it would cost since I stopped looking years ago at the little wrapped packages they sell.

    1. Frugal in the USA, you were blessed too! Yes, rhubarb is very expensive so you did really good by preserving it.

  3. Free strawberries! Mine won't be ready for a few weeks. I planted them last year and only got a few. There are so many this year and I can't wait.

    1. Making Cents of It All, we already have everbearing strawberries that bear all summer and are in the process of getting things ready to plant some June bearing strawberries. That way we'll have some to preserve and some to eat on all summer long.

  4. We don't have enough sun to grow our own so when we see green beans for a great price we put some in jars. We did a small batch of ten pints a few days before Easter.

    1. Lana, that's the way we do things we can't grow for whatever reason!

    1. Miriam, I don't usually, but with this recipe I did. These will be reserved for special treat times and one pint will make each of us a mini pie each.
