30 Day Preserving Challenge: Day 9, Apples

I put my dehydrator to use with day 9's task … apples!  I found Gala and Fuji apples on sale recently and purchased some for preserving purposes.  Here's what I did …

… peeled and chopped the apples and dehydrated them (sorry, I failed to get a 'before' picture of the apples!).

I got almost 2 quarts of dehydrated apples, I'll do more as I find apples on sale.  How will I use them?  I'll use them in granola and for snacking.  There are many other ways to use them, but these are the ways I'll use them and the reasons I chop and dehydrate apples.

I also wanted to try my hand at making apple cider vinegar so after watching this video, I put this together …  (There's a plastic bag filled with water in the top of the jar to keep the apples under water.  That's why it looks puffed up!)

Wish me luck on making ACV!!!

I'll be watching for more apple sales as I want to can some apples and make applesauce as well!

  1. I have made ACV many times. It tastes so much better then the stuff from the store. Good luck. I received a dehydrator for my birthday last week. I have been playing around with it. So far I have made apple chips with and without cinnamon. They were a hit and I will be making lots of these in the fall. I made banana chips. I think I needed to dry them some more but they were very good too. I also did some watermelon. My daughter and I were not fans but my Hubby and son liked them.

    2. Making Cents Of It All, try dehydrating pineapple. It tastes like gummies, but way healthier!!!

    3. Rhonda, I have pineapple sitting in my kitchen right now ready to be preserved, I'm going to try dehydrating pineapple. Thanks for the reminder that this is a good option.

  2. I have dried apple slices and then just cut them smaller when I wanted to use some in granola. Never thought about drying them that small! Nancy

    1. Cozy Thyme cottage, I have done the larger pieces too but the drying time is a lot less when the pieces are smaller.
