30 Day Preserving Challenge: Day 26 ... Pears

What the late freeze we had in the spring didn't do to our pear trees, the squirrels finished off!  We didn't get even one pear from our pear trees this year!  But alas, all is not lost in the 'pear' department as a friend in the community asked my hubby if we wanted any pears, his trees were full.  Of course hubby said yes so, off we went with buckets in hand.  We picked up pears that were still good on the ground that had fallen from the trees and then we picked from the trees.

Here is one of the buckets, don't those pears look good!!!

I set to work peeling them and getting them ready to can.

I par-boiled the pears, after the light syrup water I made came to a boil, at a low boil for 5 minutes.

While the pears were par-boiling I got the lids and rings ready, I already had the jars sterilizing in the oven at 200 degrees.

Fresh out of the canner!

I filled the jars, put the lid and ring on (after cleaning the rims of the jars really well) and water bathed them for 25 minutes.  I did 14 quarts and all but one sealed.  That's okay, hubby and I had them pan fried with a bit of butter and sweetener the next day in a meal.   We both commented about how good they were!

How do you preserve pears?

  1. Dear Patsi,
I'm glad you were able to get so many pears put up. They look so good. I'd like to plant some pear trees, but we are running out of fruit tree space lol.
I didn't get a chance to comment the other day, but thank you for the tip on propagating basil!

    1. LOL Kelsey, space is an issue at our place too!! The basil was really easy to propagate, I set it outside on my porch, kept the water topped off in it and let it do it's thing!

  2. Looks yummy! Wish I could do more. I have never sterilized jars in the oven. How long do you leave them in for? Do you leave them upright? Do you take them all ot at once to fill? That would free up space on my stove burners.

  3. I read someone's post on dehydrating tomatoes in the oven. Was that yours? I have a few I would like to try to do. Nancy
