More Growing Barrels

Hubby has been busy making more growing barrels/strawberry barrels complete with their own watering system ...

Here's a close up the barrels.  You can read how hubby makes them HERE  and HERE and HERE.
Sorry about the poor quality of the photo, the sun was really bright!  Notice the gallon jars under the barrels, they're there to catch water from the drain hole.  We poor this in top of the barrel in between waterings, which brings us to the watering system hubby put together ...

He used PVC pipe to form a ring that would fit in the top of each barrel and then attached the ring to another PVC pipe, which is the feed line for the water.  Hubby drilled holes in each section of the ring for the water to come out of and go into the soil.  He attached the water feed line to a water hose that is attached to a timer that is attached to an outside facet.  We have it set to come on once a day in the evening hours for 10 minutes.  This seems to be adequate enough water to keep the barrels well watered.

Here they are lined up with the watering system intact.
In top of each barrel I've planted beets that are already coming up.  In the side openings of two of the barrels I planted lettuce, carrots, mixed greens, arugula and spinach, which are also starting to come up.  In the other 3 barrels we have strawberry plants planted.

We are very pleased with the way this system is working and with the fact that we can grow a variety of foods in a small space.
