Today's Additions to the Pantry

We're at the end of our summer garden, but I'm still taking advantage of every last bit of produce that I can.  Today, I used bits and pieces of several items and did this ...

I used ...

less than perfect tomatoes (some of every variety we're growing)
peppers (some of every variety we're growing)
cabbage (leftover from canning slaw)
onions (these were from the garden)
zucchini (I had one older one that needed using)

... to create garden tomato juice.

If I had thought of it sooner, I would have added a handful of parsley along with some of the other herbs I have growing.

The only thing in our garden other than purple hull peas, which aren't ready yet, that's in it's prime of producing is okra.  I've frozen a few packages of cut up okra, but today I started canning it.   By canning it I can open a jar and drain it for roasting or pan frying when we want it.  (We've used all of our canned okra so I'll be canning lots this summer ... got to get it restocked!)

Everyday can be a pantry building day, take advantage of it if you can!

  1. Excellent progress, and that tomato juice -- what a way to use up the produce that's less than perfect or getting a little over-ripe!

  2. Would you please be kind enough to one day label what items (generically of course) you have on your pantry shelves. It would be immensely helpful to us newbies out there. Thank you.

    1. Alison, I'll start working on it but let me share that I started out with nothing when I decided I wanted a well-stocked pantry. Over time I built up and am maintaining a well-stocked pantry while feeding my family out of it. I did it and you can too.
