I’ve been thinking about the holidays we celebrate in October, November and December and have started preparing for them now … in June!
(picture: this is the first block in the 'santa hat' quilt I'm making for my 'Christmas in July' month long project. Instructions on making it can be found HERE. Yes, it's free!)
For the special foods, clothing, etc we like to have during each of the earlier mentioned holidays, I’ve been making ingredient lists, clothing needs lists and gift giving lists. I've been purchasing said items and or making said items a few at
a time and putting them away until the appropriate holidays. I’ve set aside a lidded
tub and am placing the shelf-stable ingredients/items, etc in it. This will ensure that we have what we need
and won’t run the risk of said items being hard to find or in some instances,
completely unavailable when each holiday arrives. For the food ingredients, they will be set aside and away from our 'working pantry,' where they'll be safe from being used before their intended time.
For such a time as this, we need to starting preparing for the holidays now so we're not left disappointed or frustrated over availability or in some cases simply unable to afford them.
If you find this series helpful, please share it with others. If we all do what we can to help each other whether it be through writing, sharing, teaching, coming along beside each other or any other means, the world will be a better place!
Until the next post,
Hi! That quilt is going to be sew cute. What a great way to use up bits and pieces of fabric. Might make it myself.

Coleen, it was an easy block to stitch up! I'm using what I have on hand so yes, I should be able to knock out a few scraps with this one!
DeleteI have been buying gifts ahead but had not even considered foods yet. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteLana, with all the shortages, etc projected for fall and winter I want to do everything I can to make sure my family has our traditional holiday foods.
DeleteI started on the gifts for this year, straight after Christmas. We have a glut of Birthdays in Jan, Feb and March. I have been gifted several large tubs of fabric. I am looking at what can be made with what I have, and whom this can be gifted to.
ReplyDeleteI have decided that for most, kitchen/household hampers will be put together. I am now thinking I might add some extra food stuffs to these hampers. Thanks for the great idea.
Jane, those tubs of fabric is a really nice gift!!! I like your mindset ...'I am looking at what can be made with what I have and whom this can be gifted to.' I hope you will share pictures of what you make, you are so talented!
DeleteI put back foods for holidays last year and am doing it this year. My grandchildren live so far away and shipping was so iffy last year, that I just gave Amazon gift cards. Teens love that.
ReplyDeletePractical Parsimony, that's a good idea for teens and you're right, shipping was iffy and there were issues with availability as well.
DeleteThat’s a great idea! I have some candles to give as part of gifts but I need to get moving. I’m supposed to have knee replacement in mid October so shopping will be difficult after.
ReplyDeleteLee Ann, now is definitely the time to get as much ahead as you can!
DeleteI am going to start buying my baking supplies early because they can be frozen, and who knows what the economy and grocery stores will look like this year. I usually start gift shopping in September, but I will be starting earlier this year for the same reason. Might not be able to afford enough gas to leave the house by then!
ReplyDeleteKathy, exactly!
DeleteI love the idea of starting to collect the food supplies now and keeping them separate. Many of the items that I use for Thanksgiving and Christmas are non-perishable items. I could stock up on those first. The menus don't change much. My kids are super traditional in that respect! I've been thinking of Christmas for a bit now. I've been knitting socks for birthday and Christmas presents.
