Pantry Building Challenge 2022: #5

Our challenge for last week had us doing some math!

It looked like this ...

What is the current temperature where you live?  If you don't have an outside thermometer, check online for your area.

Once you have your current outside temperature, subtract the smaller number from the larger.  For example, if the current temperature is 83, 8 - 3 = 5.  Add 5 items to your pantry.

Whatever your number is, add that number of items to your pantry this week in whatever form you desire.

I checked the temperature for our area one afternoon at the first of the week and it was 60 degrees. Six - zero = six, so that's how many items I added to my pantry.

Here are the 6 items I added ....

Hubby went to the grocery store to pick up a few items and while there he found Boston butts on sale for $.99/lb.  They were on the small size, so he purchased two.  We slow cooked them all day long, had a meal from it, canned these six jars and have enough for BBQ sandwiches later in the week.  I think I remember the price for both of them being around $18 total making each meal a little over $2 for the meat.  Actually, it will be less than that because each jar of the home-canned meat will be a meal and leftovers.  Looking at it that way that's meat for 14 meals making it a little over $1 per meal!  I'll take it!

Before I give next week's challenge, I want to revisit some ideas we've been sharing on where to store our pantry if you don't have a designated pantry room or area.  I don't so I have to get creative and this week I did this ...

This is an antique meat box that we salvaged out of an old barn many years ago.  We cleaned it up (and boy, oh boy, was it ever a mess) and have been using it ever since for various things, most recently a part of my pantry!  Notice that big empty wasted space towards the top ... we'll, not anymore!

I asked my hubby to add the top shelf and look how much I was able to store!

When you don't have a pantry area, but you want a pantry, you get creative!

Our challenge for next week has us thinking about candy corn (yes, candy corn) and the colors that make up traditional candy corn.  So, for this week we're going to add something to our pantry that is either orange, yellow or white.  Let's have some fun with this one!

Until next time,

A Working Pantry is a way of life, a lifestyle if you will!

My pantry is intentional, purposeful, simple, practical, frugal and what works for my family.  It’s the food items and household supplies that keep my household running smoothly ready and available when they are needed.  It’s my contribution to our family’s economy and my work-from-home ‘job.'

  1. Last week, it was 45* out, so I had 1. I stayed away from the grocery store this week (I was busy with housecleaning and really had no real need). But I used the last of my eggs on Tuesday and wanted to bake cookies for the weekend. So I made a real quick in-out at Aldi for eggs and butter, and grabbed a package of coffee for my pantry. I have flavored coffee in my stockpile, but this will add a back-up, since I know I'm going to need to open my last bag of coffee next week. I'll be traveling much of next week, so I don't know if I'll get to the challenge or not. If I do, I'll likely add a basket of hard-shell squash (Acorn, Butternut, etc.) to keep in my garage over the winter.

  2. Great price on the pork and adding shelves is the way to go!

I only needed to add one item but I added 4 Krusteaz pancake mixes, two Quaker oats and 2 lasagna noodles. All were BOGO or on sale. We keep adding to the pantry no matter where we are.

  3. It was 55F out, so 0 was the number of items to add. However, I bought 10 more cans of green beans, and two large cans of peaches. The beans had an Oct 23 date, and the peaches had a 2025 date. I will stock up, even if the game said zero.

  4. It was 62 degrees. The OTC first aide pantry needed some restocking so I added epsom salts, Neosporin and chapstick . To the freezer 2 dozen homemade English muffins and 4 dozen chocolate chocolate chip cookies, as well as 3 quarts of bone broth and 10 oz of chicken and turkey that came off the bones.

  5. Although my item was just 1 I added four 1-pound rolls of turkey sausage to the freezer. I had intended to do a bigger grocery haul but circumstances prevented it and I just grabbed those as I passed the freezer section while running quickly through the only store I was able to visit this week. Each roll usually nets us 3-4 meals depending on how I'm using it.
